Yvonne Furneaux (born Elisabeth Yvonne Scatcherd; 11 May 1926 – 5 July 2024) was a talented French-British actress. She trained at the famous Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. Yvonne worked with many well-known film directors like Federico Fellini and Roman Polanski. She also appeared in popular adventure and horror movies.
Early Life and Education
Yvonne Furneaux was born in Roubaix, France, on 11 May 1926. Her parents were English. Her father, Joseph Scatcherd, worked as a bank director. Her mother, Amy Furneaux, was from England. Yvonne also had a sister named Jeanne.
Before World War II began, her family moved to England. In 1946, Yvonne went to St Hilda's College, Oxford University to study languages. At Oxford, she was known as "Tessa Scatcherd." She loved being part of the university's theatre groups. After finishing her studies at Oxford, she went on to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. She graduated from this acting school in 1951.
Acting Career Highlights
Yvonne Furneaux started her acting career on stage when she was 24 years old. She performed in famous plays like Macbeth and The Taming of the Shrew. She even appeared in Vogue magazine in 1953, featured as one of "The Young Look in the Theatre."
Her first film role was a small part in the comedy Meet Me Tonight (1952). She then played supporting roles in several films. These included The Beggar's Opera (1953) and adventure movies like The Master of Ballantrae. She also starred as the main female character in the horror film The Mummy (1959).
In 1955, Yvonne starred in the Italian film Le Amiche. This movie won a major award, the Silver Lion, at the Venice Film Festival. This success helped her start a successful career in Italian movies. She played Emma in Federico Fellini's famous film La Dolce Vita. Her character was engaged to the character played by Marcello Mastroianni. Yvonne also acted in several "peplum" films, which are historical adventure movies. She returned to France to star in two films for director Claude Autant-Lara.
In 1965, she played the sister of Catherine Deneuve's character in the exciting psychological thriller Repulsion. This film was directed by Roman Polanski.
Personal Life
Yvonne Furneaux was married to a cinematographer named Jacques Natteau. He passed away in 2007. They had one son together, named Nicholas. From 1985, Yvonne lived in Lausanne, Switzerland.
Yvonne Furneaux died on 5 July 2024, at her home in North Hampton, New Hampshire. She was 98 years old and passed away due to complications from a stroke.
