Yvonne Helene Jacquette (born December 15, 1934 – died April 23, 2023) was an American artist. She was a talented painter, printmaker, and teacher. Yvonne was especially famous for her unique paintings of landscapes seen from above. She often showed cities and towns from a low, angled aerial view. Her art frequently used a special style called pointillistic painting. This means she used many small dots of color to create her images.

Early Life and Art Training

Yvonne Jacquette was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on December 15, 1934. She grew up in Stamford, Connecticut. Yvonne started learning about art when she was just 10 years old. By 1947, she was taking private lessons. Her teacher was a traditional painter named Robert Roché.

Yvonne continued her art studies at the Rhode Island School of Design. She graduated from there in 1955.

Her Career as an Artist and Teacher

Yvonne Jacquette was also a teacher. She taught at Moore College of Art. She was also a visiting artist at the University of Pennsylvania from 1972 to 1976. Later, she taught at Parsons School of Design from 1975 to 1978. She returned to teach at the University of Pennsylvania from 1979 to 1984.

One of her big projects was a three-part mural called "Autumn Expression." She created this in 1980 for the U.S. Post Office in Bangor, Maine. The Smithsonian American Art Museum says Yvonne held many teaching jobs. She was also honored by the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1990.

Yvonne once shared how she started painting views from above. She told art critic John Yau in an interview:

It happened by accident, of course. I didn’t ever plan it, I was going to visit my parents who had just moved to California and I was in a plane with watercolors and I started to see that the clouds were amazing when you’re right in them.

Yvonne Jacquette married Rudy Burckhardt in 1964. She was a visiting artist at the Siena Art Institute in 2012. She lived in New York City for many years. Yvonne passed away on April 23, 2023.

How She Created Her Art

Yvonne Jacquette's art often started with real-life studies. She would use pastels on paper or take photos. These photos were taken from airplanes, tall buildings, or small rented planes. She often flew just to study how clouds looked from above. She also wanted to see how landscapes appeared from high up.

Some people called her the "Canaletto of the skies." Canaletto was a famous painter known for his detailed city scenes. Yvonne's paintings are full of bright colors. They show detailed views of cities and the countryside. She painted them at different times of day and night. Her unique views and unusual angles make you think about how we see things. It's almost like the buildings in her cityscapes have their own personalities.
