How Zack and Cody Were Created
Dylan Sprouse shared that the idea for twins living in a hotel came from their own lives. When they were filming the movie Big Daddy, they stayed in a hotel for four months. This experience sparked the idea for the show.
Dylan mentioned that the characters of Zack and Cody were first based on his and Cole's real personalities. In fact, their original names for the show were even Dylan and Cole!
About the Twins
Zack and Cody Martin were born in Seattle, Washington. Zack arrived at 6:30 AM, and Cody followed ten minutes later at 6:40 AM. The exact year of their birth is a bit unclear in the shows. One episode of The Suite Life on Deck suggests 1993, while an old baby video in The Suite Life of Zack & Cody shows a date of September 23, 1992.
The twins went to Buckner Middle School and later Cheevers High School during The Suite Life of Zack & Cody. When they moved to the ship in The Suite Life on Deck, they attended Seven Seas High.
In one episode of The Suite Life on Deck, Zack and Cody argue about school. Zack admits he feels less smart than Cody. Cody then shares that he works hard in school because Zack is better at sports, more popular, and better with girls. Cody also has a strong fear of germs. The shows also hint that the twins have Swedish family roots. They once planned to go to Harvard University, but a bad experience with a dean there changed their minds.
Cody Martin
Cody is usually the smarter and more serious twin. He is often more caring, sensitive, and polite than Zack. However, he can sometimes be a bit mean or greedy too. Cody generally gets excellent grades in school. Zack even says Cody has a perfect 5.0 grade point average.
People sometimes call Cody a "nerd," but he prefers to be called "educationally gifted." London Tipton, whose father owns the Tipton Hotel, often asks Cody to help her with her schoolwork.
Even though Cody is very smart and mature, he sometimes acts younger than his age. For example, he calls his mom "Mommy" and screams when he's scared. He even carries a "blankey" (a security blanket) into his teenage years. These habits become a funny running joke in the series. Cody later decides to attend Yale University. His biggest dream is to win a Nobel Prize. Cody likes long-term relationships with one girl, unlike Zack who dates many.
Zack Martin
Zack is more relaxed, outgoing, and sometimes a bit self-centered compared to Cody. He is usually less mature than his brother. But Zack does show kindness and care at times. He often gets bad grades in school.
However, Zack is actually intelligent when he tries. In one episode, he was the smartest kid in summer school. He even taught the other students the lesson himself. This shows that Zack could do much better in school if he put in the effort. He is also very good at woodshop. His teacher trusted him to lead the class and suggested him for advanced woodshop.
