History of Zanesfield
Zanesfield gets its name from Isaac Zane. He was born in 1753 in a place that is now Hardy County, West Virginia. Isaac was the younger brother of Ebenezer Zane, who has a city named after him too: Zanesville, Ohio.
When Isaac was nine years old in 1762, Native Americans from the Wyandot tribe captured him. He was adopted into their tribe. Isaac lived with the Wyandot people along the Sandusky River for 17 years. He later married a Wyandot woman named Myeerah, whose father was Chief Tarhe. They had several children together.
Isaac Zane was very helpful because he knew both the Wyandot language and English. He also had strong connections with the Wyandot people. He worked as a guide for government officials from the Northwest Territory. These officials were meeting with Native American tribes to make treaties.
Around 1795, Isaac Zane bought about 1,800 acres (7.3 km2) of land from the government where Zanesfield is now. In 1802, the United States Congress gave him even more land, about 1,920 acres (7.8 km2), in Champaign County, Ohio. This was a reward for his service to the United States. In 1803, he became one of the first leaders, called trustees, for Jefferson Township. Isaac Zane passed away in 1816 and was buried near Zanesfield.
The village of Zanesfield was officially planned and set up in 1819 by Alexander Long and Ebenezer Zane.
