Zauggenried was once a small town, or municipality, in Switzerland. It was located in the Bern-Mittelland area of the canton of Bern. On January 1, 2014, Zauggenried joined with several other towns. These towns included Büren zum Hof, Etzelkofen, Grafenried, Limpach, Mülchi, and Schalunen. They all became part of the larger town of Fraubrunnen.

History of Zauggenried

Zauggenried is a very old place. It was first written about in the year 894. Back then, it was called ad Riete. Later, between 1261 and 1263, people called it Reide. In 1336, its name changed to ze dem enren Riede. Finally, in 1380, it became known as Zouggenried, which is close to its modern name.

How Zauggenried Grew

The village of Zauggenried started with farms spread out in a marshy area. This area was near the Urtenen River. By the 1200s, a place called Fraubrunnen Abbey gained control over the land. They also had the right to run a local court. The Abbey continued to gain more power in the village. By 1513, they owned all the land and had full control.

However, things changed in 1528. The city of Bern adopted the Protestant Reformation. This meant they changed from the Catholic religion to Protestantism. They also took control of the Catholic monasteries, like Fraubrunnen Abbey. When Bern took over the Abbey, they also got all the land it owned. Zauggenried then became part of an area called the bailiwick of Fraubrunnen. It stayed part of this area until 1803. At that time, an event called the Act of Mediation ended all the old bailiwicks. Zauggenried then became part of the new District of Fraubrunnen.

Farming and Education Changes

In the 1800s, farmers in Zauggenried changed what they grew. They switched from growing food crops to raising dairy cows. In 1850, a cheese-making group was started. It was called the Käsereigenossenschaft Kernenried-Zauggenried. This group bought milk from local farms to make cheese. The cheese factory worked until 2001. Zauggenried has mostly remained a farming area. It is still planned to stay that way.

During the 1600s, the towns of Kernenried and Zauggenried shared a school building. This partnership ended for a while. But in 1986, they decided to share a school district again.
