Ziziphus lotus is a small deciduous tree that loses its leaves every year. It belongs to the buckthorn family called Rhamnaceae. This tree grows naturally in the Mediterranean region, including parts of the Sahara desert in Morocco and also in Somalia.
Many people call Ziziphus lotus by the name "jujube". It is very similar to another tree, Z. jujuba, which is known as the true jujube.
What Ziziphus lotus Looks Like
This interesting tree can grow to be about 2 to 5 meters (around 6 to 16 feet) tall. It has shiny green leaves that are about 5 centimeters (2 inches) long.
The tree also produces tasty fruit. This fruit is round and dark yellow, like a small ball. It is a type of drupe, which means it has a hard pit inside, similar to a peach or cherry. Each fruit is about 1 to 1.5 centimeters (0.4 to 0.6 inches) across.
