Ștefan Andrei (born March 29, 1931 – died August 31, 2014) was an important Romanian politician. He was part of the Romanian Communist Party. He served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Romania from 1978 to 1985. After the 1989 revolution that ended the rule of Nicolae Ceaușescu, Ștefan Andrei was arrested.

Early Life and Education

Ștefan Andrei was born into a very poor family in Oltenia, a region in Romania. This was also the home region of the Romanian leader Nicolae Ceaușescu. When he was a child, Ștefan Andrei worked as a shepherd.

Even though he started in a difficult situation, he really wanted to learn more. He worked hard and eventually became a leader in the Romanian Communist Party. He earned a special degree from the university. His studies focused on how communist groups worked around the world. This work was later used as an important guide for the party leaders.

Andrei was known as a very smart and kind person. He loved collecting books and would add to his collection during his trips abroad. People also saw him as a good husband and a dedicated family man. He was married to Violeta Andrei, a famous Romanian movie actress.

Political Career Highlights

Ștefan Andrei started his political journey by helping to build connections with other communist governments and groups worldwide. In April 1972, he became a key person for foreign relations within the party. By November 1974, he joined a very important group of leaders in Romania.

On March 8, 1978, he became the Minister of Foreign Affairs. This meant he was in charge of Romania's relationships with other countries. As Minister, Andrei tried to make Romania less dependent on the Soviet Union. He did this by focusing on building ties with countries in Southeast Asia, like Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand.

He also worked to improve trade, business, and education with many African countries. These included Guinea, Gabon, Angola, Zambia, Mozambique, Burundi, Sudan, and Zaire. This helped Romania get energy and other goods from more places. During his time as Minister, he also advised Nicu Ceaușescu, the younger son of Nicolae Ceaușescu.

His time as Minister of Foreign Affairs ended on November 11, 1985. It was reported that Elena Ceaușescu, the First Lady, removed him from his position. She then appointed Ilie Văduva to take over. After this, Andrei was given a new role. He became a Secretary in charge of economic matters for the Central Committee.

After the Romanian Revolution in 1989, Ștefan Andrei was arrested. He faced legal consequences related to the events of 1989. He spent some time in prison.

Ștefan Andrei passed away on August 31, 2014, in Snagov. He was 83 years old.
