Europe
- On May 4, Pope Alexander IV issued a special official letter, called a papal bull, named Licet ecclesiae catholicae. This letter officially created the Augustinian religious order. A religious order is a group of people who live together and follow specific rules for their spiritual life.
- The city of Lviv, which is now in Ukraine, was founded by King Danylo of Rus.
- Theodore II Lascaris, who was the Byzantine Emperor (even though he was living in exile in the Empire of Nicaea at the time), successfully finished a military campaign. This campaign, which had started a year earlier, helped him take back the region of Thrace from the Bulgarians.
- Abingdon School was founded in England.
- Roger Bacon, a famous English scholar, became a Franciscan Friar, joining a religious group called the Franciscans.
Asia
- In October, a Mongol commander named Baiju, who was working for the powerful leader Hulagu Khan, led his army to victory. They defeated Kay Ka'us II of the Sultanate of Rüm and took control of Anatolia, which is a large part of modern-day Turkey.
- On December 15, Hulagu Khan captured and destroyed the Hashshashin stronghold at Alamut. This fortress was located in what is now Iran.
- After his victories, Hulagu Khan established the Ilkhanate dynasty in Persia. This new kingdom became one of the four main parts of the vast Mongol Empire.
- In Japan, the Kenchō era came to an end, and the Kōgen era began.
