This article is about the number twelve. For the year, see 12.
Twelve is a very interesting number. It comes right after eleven and just before thirteen. Twelve is an even number, which means you can divide it perfectly by two.
Many numbers can divide into twelve without leaving any remainder. These special numbers are called its divisors: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 12 itself. When you count things in order, twelve is known as the "twelfth." In the ancient Roman numerals system, you write twelve as XII. Twelve is also the base for a number system called "duodecimal." This system uses 12 unique symbols instead of the 10 we use in our everyday number system (0-9).
Mathematics Fun Facts
Twelve holds a special place in the world of mathematics.
- Twelve is the very first abundant number. An abundant number is a number where the sum of its divisors (not including itself) is greater than the number itself. For twelve, its divisors are 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6. If you add them up (1+2+3+4+6), you get 16, which is more than 12!
