The year 12 AD was a special year in the 1st century. It was a leap year, which means it had an extra day, just like some years today! People back then used the Julian calendar, which was the main calendar in the Roman Empire. During this year, important leaders called Consuls were Caesar and Capito.
What Happened in 12 AD?
- New Leaders in Judea: Annius Rufus became the new Prefect of Judea. A Prefect was like a governor, a powerful official who ruled a Roman province.
- Roman Consuls: Germanicus and Gaius Fonteius Capito became Roman Consuls. Consuls were the highest elected officials in the Roman Republic and Empire. They were like the presidents or prime ministers of their time.
- A Counselor Returns: Quirinius came back from Judea to become a special advisor, or counselor, to Tiberius. Tiberius was the Roman Emperor at the time.
- Ovid's Writing: The famous Roman poet Ovid stopped writing his poem called Fasti. This poem was about Roman festivals and holidays. Ovid stopped because he was far from the libraries in Rome and didn't have the books he needed. He had already finished six books of Fasti.
Important Births in 12 AD
- August 31 – A boy named Caligula was born. He would later become a very famous, or infamous, Roman Emperor.
