The 2013–14 NHL season was a big year for ice hockey fans! It was the 97th time the National Hockey League (NHL) had a season. This league is where professional ice hockey teams in North America play.

What Was New This Season?

This season brought some exciting changes to the NHL. The league decided to "realign" its teams. This means they changed how the teams were grouped together.

New Divisions for Teams

Before this season, the 30 NHL teams were split into six different groups called divisions. For the 2013–14 season, they changed to just four divisions. This made the travel for teams a bit easier and created new rivalries.

The regular season started on October 1, 2013. It ended on April 13, 2014. After that, the exciting 2014 Stanley Cup playoffs began on April 16.

Only One Canadian Team in Playoffs

Something unusual happened this season. For the first time since 1973, only one team from Canada made it to the playoffs. That team was the Montreal Canadiens. Usually, more Canadian teams qualify for the playoffs.

No All-Star Game This Year

Hockey fans might have noticed something missing from the season. There was no NHL All-Star Game in 2014. This special game usually happens in the middle of the season.

Why No All-Star Game?

The reason for no All-Star Game was the 2014 Winter Olympics. These Olympic Games were held in Sochi, Russia. The NHL, along with other hockey groups, agreed to let NHL players go play for their home countries in the Olympics.

To make this possible, the NHL took a break. The league stopped playing games on February 9. Players then traveled to Sochi to compete for Olympic medals. The NHL season started up again on February 25, after the Olympics were over.

The New NHL Divisions

Here's how the 30 NHL teams were organized into their new divisions for the 2013–14 season:
