The 2014 Major League Soccer season was the 19th season for Major League Soccer (MLS), which is the top professional soccer league in the United States and Canada. In 2014, 19 teams played in the league. Sixteen teams were from the United States, and three were from Canada. The Seattle Sounders won the Supporters' Shield, which is given to the team with the best record during the regular season. The Los Angeles Galaxy won the MLS Cup, which is the championship trophy awarded at the end of the playoffs. The top goal scorer for the season was Bradley Wright-Phillips, who scored 27 goals.

Teams in the League

In the 2014 MLS season, 19 different teams competed. These teams were divided into two groups called conferences: the Eastern Conference and the Western Conference. Most of the teams were from the United States, but three teams were from Canada.

  • The Seattle Sounders qualified for the CONCACAF Champions League because they won both the Supporters' Shield and the 2014 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
  • The LA Galaxy qualified because they won the MLS Cup.
  • D.C. United qualified because they won their conference championship.
  • Since Seattle won two titles and two Canadian teams also qualified, Real Salt Lake, as the next best American team, also qualified.
  • The Vancouver Whitecaps qualified as the best Canadian team for that season.
  • The Montreal Impact qualified because they won the 2014 Canadian Championship.

MLS Cup Playoffs

After the regular season, the best teams from each conference played in the MLS Cup playoffs. This was a knockout tournament to decide the league champion.

The Los Angeles Galaxy eventually won the MLS Cup, beating the New England Revolution in the final match.
