The 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup was a huge international football tournament for women's national teams. It was the eighth time this exciting event took place. France hosted the tournament from June 7 to July 7, 2019. It was the first time France hosted the Women's World Cup.

Twenty-four teams from all over the world competed to become champions. The United States were the defending champions from the previous tournament. This event was special because Chile played in the Women's World Cup for the very first time! Also, Italy returned to the tournament after not playing since 1999.

Teams: Who Played in the World Cup?

Teams from different parts of the world had to play special qualification games to earn their spot in the World Cup. This made sure only the best teams competed.

  • Host Nation: France automatically qualified because they were hosting the tournament.
  • Asia (AFC): Teams like China, Thailand, Australia, Japan, and South Korea qualified through the AFC Women's Asian Cup.
  • South America (CONMEBOL): Brazil and Chile earned their spots from the Copa América Femenina. Chile's qualification was a big moment for their team!
  • Europe (UEFA): Countries like Spain and Italy qualified by winning their UEFA qualification groups. Italy's return was exciting for their fans.

In total, 24 teams from six different football regions (confederations) made it to the finals.

Tournament Format: How the World Cup Works

The tournament was divided into two main parts: the group stage and the knockout stage.

Group Stage: The First Round of Games

In the group stage, the 24 teams were split into six groups of four teams each (Group A to Group F). Every team in a group played against each other once. Teams earned points for their games:

  • 3 points for a win
  • 1 point for a draw (tie)
  • 0 points for a loss

After all the games in a group were played, the top two teams from each of the six groups moved on to the next stage. Also, the four best third-placed teams (from all groups combined) also got to move forward. This made the competition very exciting!

Knockout Stage: The Play-offs to the Final

The knockout stage was a series of single-elimination games. This means if a team lost, they were out of the tournament. The games included:

  • Round of 16: 16 teams played.
  • Quarter-finals: 8 teams played.
  • Semi-finals: 4 teams played.
  • Third Place Play-off: The two teams that lost in the semi-finals played for third place.
  • Final: The two teams that won their semi-finals played for the championship!

If a game was tied after 90 minutes, the teams played an extra 30 minutes (called extra time). If it was still tied, the winner was decided by a penalty shoot-out. This is where players take turns shooting from the penalty spot.
