Emperor Wu Di (420–422)

The year 422 (written as CDXXII in Roman numerals) was a common year that started on a Sunday in the Julian calendar. It was a time when big changes happened in the Roman Empire, Europe, and Asia.

What Happened in 422?

The Roman Empire's Year

  • The war between the Roman Empire and the Sassanid Empire (Persia) ended. Emperor Theodosius II signed a 100-year peace treaty with Persia after two years of fighting. Both empires agreed to allow people to practice their own religion freely.
  • On March 3, Emperor Theodosius II made a new law about getting supplies ready during times of peace. He also paid the Huns 350 pounds of gold every year to keep the peace. This was like a payment to stop them from attacking.
  • A large statue of Theodosius II was put up in a place called Hebdomon. Writings on its base said he was "victorious everywhere and forever."
  • The famous Colosseum in Rome got cracks in its walls because of an earthquake.

Europe's Events

  • The Roman army marched into Gaul (which is now France). They captured and executed the Frankish king, Theudemeres, along with his family.

Asia's Events

  • In China, Shao Di, who was 16 years old, became the new emperor of the Liu Song Dynasty. He took over after his father, Wu Di, passed away.

Art and Religion

  • Petrus, a bishop from Illyria, began building the Church of Santa Sabina. This was around this time.
  • On September 4, Pope Boniface I died after being pope for four years. His time as pope was interrupted for a few weeks by another person who claimed to be pope, Eulalius. After Boniface I, Celestine I became the 43rd pope.
