Byzantine Empire
- The Ostrogoths, a powerful Germanic tribe led by their king Totila, took back control of the city of Rome. This was a big event in the ongoing wars between the Ostrogoths and the Byzantine Empire.
- The very last chariot races were held at the Circus Maximus in Rome. The Circus Maximus was a huge ancient stadium, famous for these exciting races. After this year, it was no longer used for such events.
- Around this time, between 549 and 564, a beautiful mosaic artwork called "Transfiguration of Christ" was created. You can still see it in the Church of the Virgin at Saint Catherine's Monastery on Mount Sinai in Egypt.
