History of Adelphi
The name "Adelphi" comes from the old Adelphi Mill, which was built in 1796. This mill is located along the Northwest Branch of the Anacostia River. It's still there today and people can visit it or even rent it for special events.
In the 1800s, a wealthy person named George Washington Riggs owned a large estate called Green Hill. This estate covered much of the land where Adelphi is now. Later, in the 1920s, parts of this area were bought by Leander McCormick-Goodhart.
A famous labor organizer named Mary Harris Jones, also known as "Mother Jones," passed away in 1930 in what is now Adelphi. She lived on a farm near Powder Mill and Riggs Roads. There is a special marker there today to remember her.
Unlike nearby towns like Hyattsville and College Park, Adelphi didn't have many buildings until after World War II. After the war, many new neighborhoods were quickly built.
In the mid-1950s, these new neighborhoods decided to join together and call themselves "Adelphi." They chose this name to honor the historic mill. A popular spot in the community is the Adelphi Pool, which opened in the late 1950s. It's a private pool where members can swim, take lessons, and join swim teams. It even has a long water slide and a basketball hoop!
In 1971, a science center called the Harry Diamond Laboratories was built in Adelphi. Today, it's known as the Adelphi Laboratory Center. It's a big research lab for the U.S. Army. Other important government buildings nearby include the National Archives at College Park and the main office for the Food and Drug Administration.
