The cat gecko (Aeluroscalabotes felinus) is a fascinating type of gecko found in parts of Southeast Asia, including Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Cambodia, and Thailand. It's the only known species in its entire genus called Aeluroscalabotes, which makes it quite unique! People often call it the cat gecko because of a cute habit: when it sleeps, it curls its tail around its body, much like a cat does.

Discovering the Cat Gecko
What Does a Cat Gecko Look Like?
The cat gecko is a slender lizard, usually a pretty red-brown color. It has small white spots on its body and a solid white color under its chin, sometimes extending to its belly. Some geckos might even have brown patches along their backs. Scientists consider it one of the older types of geckos because its body shape is very similar to the few fossils of ancient geckos that have been found. These geckos can grow to about 18 centimeters (7 inches) long, with males typically being a bit smaller than females.
Where Do Cat Geckos Live?
Cat geckos love cool, damp places. They are often found in rainforests that are high up in the mountains, known as montane rainforests. They are also considered semi-arboreal, which means they spend a lot of their time both on the ground and climbing in trees and bushes. Since they are nocturnal, they are most active at night, hunting for food when it's dark.
What Do Cat Geckos Eat?
These geckos are insectivorous, which means their diet mainly consists of insects. They enjoy munching on a variety of small insects and other tiny creatures like arthropods that they find in their forest home.
Cat Gecko Family Tree
Scientists work hard to understand how all living things are related. They classify animals into groups, like families and genera, to help us learn more about them. The cat gecko has been studied by many scientists over the years, which has helped us understand its special features.
Different Types of Cat Geckos
Within the cat gecko species, there are two recognized subspecies. Think of subspecies as slightly different versions of the same animal, often found in different areas.
- Aeluroscalabotes felinus felinus (Günther, 1864)
- Aeluroscalabotes felinus multituberculatus (Kopstein, 1927)
Cat Geckos as Pets
Sometimes, cat geckos are kept as pets. However, they are not very common in the pet trade, and it can be quite challenging to breed them in captivity. Geckos caught in the wild can sometimes have health problems, and they can get stressed easily. This means that caring for them as pets requires a lot of knowledge and dedication to keep them healthy and happy.
Protecting the Cat Gecko
The exact number of cat geckos living in the wild is not fully known. While they are not considered common across all the areas where they live, they don't currently have a special worldwide conservation status. This means they are not listed as endangered globally. However, in Thailand, there are rules against collecting and exporting them, which helps protect their local populations.
