Allen Latham Anderson was an important American military leader and engineer. He became a Brigadier General during the American Civil War. Life Story of Allen Latham Anderson

Early Life and Education

Allen Latham Anderson was born on March 18, 1837. His hometown was Dayton, Ohio. His parents were Charles Anderson and Eliza Jane Brown Anderson. He went to local schools in Dayton for his early education.

In 1854, Allen began studying at the United States Military Academy. This is a famous school for training army officers. He graduated in 1859. He was a very good student, ranking 16th in his class. After graduating, he became a Second Lieutenant. He joined the 2nd Infantry Regiment. Later, he moved to the 5th Infantry Regiment. He was then sent to California. He traveled there on a long trip around Cape Horn.

Serving in the Civil War

The American Civil War started in 1861. Allen Anderson was promoted to First Lieutenant on May 14, 1861. He was first sent to New Mexico. This was because Confederate forces were moving towards Fort Union. He took part in the Battle of Valverde. His brave actions in this battle were recognized. He was promoted to Brevet Major for his excellent service.

On December 3, 1862, he became a Captain. He was stationed in Prescott. Captain Anderson then went on a mission into Western Arizona. He led a campaign against some Apache leaders. On March 13, 1865, he was promoted again. He became a Brevet Brigadier General. This was for his brave and valuable service during the war. Around this time, he also commanded the 8th California Infantry Regiment.

After the War

Allen Anderson officially left the military on November 10, 1865. However, he continued to serve until January 7, 1867. After that, he decided to become a civil engineer. He worked as the Chief Engineer for the New Mexico Mining Company until 1869.

In 1870, he returned to Cincinnati, Ohio. He became the Chief Engineer of Public Works there. He held this job until 1879. He continued his engineering work as a private consultant. This lasted until 1894. At that time, his health began to decline. He moved to Southwestern Kentucky.

In his final years, he lived at the U.S. Soldiers' Home in Santa Barbara, California. He passed away on June 9, 1910, from pneumonia. He was buried in Kuttawa Cemetery.
