Allsvenskan (which means "The All Swedish") is a major bandy league in Sweden. Since the 2007–08 season, it has been the second-highest level of bandy in the country. Bandy is a team sport played on ice, similar to ice hockey but with a ball instead of a puck.
The league currently has 24 teams. These teams are divided into two regional groups. This setup began when the old Allsvenskan and Elitserien leagues were changed. A new top league, called Elitserien, was then created.
How the Allsvenskan League Works
For its first two years, Allsvenskan had 30 teams. These teams were split into three groups. Each group had ten teams. The groups were set up based on geography. There was a North group, a Mid group, and a South group.
In the third season (2009–10), the league changed its structure. Allsvenskan was reorganized into two groups. These were the North group (Norra) and the South group (Södra). Each of these groups had 12 teams. This meant there were only 24 teams in total. This structure has stayed the same since then.
