Alton is a village in Staffordshire, England. It is well-known for the exciting theme park, Alton Towers. This park was built around the old Alton Mansion. The mansion used to belong to the Earls of Shrewsbury. A famous architect named Augustus Pugin helped design parts of it.
The village is located on the eastern side of the Churnet River. Alton is mentioned in the Domesday Book. This was a very old survey of England from 1086. The village has many interesting buildings. These include the Round-House, Alton Castle, St Peter's Church, The Malt House, and St John's Church. Alton Castle is now a special place for young people to go on retreats.
Alton's Railway History
Alton used to have its own train station. It was called Alton railway station. The North Staffordshire Railway opened it on July 13, 1849. The station helped people visit the area for many years. However, it closed down in January 1965.
The Chained Oak Legend
One famous spot in Alton is the Chained Oak. This tree is known because of a ride at Alton Towers called Hex – The Legend of the Towers. The ride tells a spooky story about the tree and the Earl of Shrewsbury. The legend says that if the chains around the tree ever break, bad things will happen to the Earl's family.
