Amel is a small town in Belgium. It is located in the Walloon province of Liège. Amel is also part of the German-speaking Community of Belgium. This means that German is the main language spoken there.

What Does the Name "Amel" Mean?
The name Amel comes from an old Celtic word. It means "water." The Amblève River flows right through the town. In German, this river is also called Amel.
Famous People from Amel
Amel is the birthplace of Karl-Heinz Lambertz. He used to be a very important leader in the German-speaking community of Belgium. He was like the "Minister-President" of the community.
History of Amel
Amel has a long and interesting history. It has been the site of important events.
Early Battles
In the year 716, a big fight called the Battle of Amblève happened near Amel. It was between Charles Martel and his army from Austrasia, and the armies of the Frisians and Neustrians. Charles Martel won this battle. It was his first major victory.
World War II Events
Amel saw a lot of fighting during World War II. This was especially true during a big battle called the Battle of the Bulge.
On December 17, 1944, a very sad event happened in the village of Wereth. This event is known as the Wereth Massacre. Eleven brave soldiers from the African American 333rd Field Artillery Battalion were killed by enemy soldiers. In 1994, a special memorial was built in Wereth. It honors these eleven soldiers.
Sports in Amel
Amel has its own football club called KFC Grün-Weiß Amel. They play in a local league called the Liège Provincial League. This league is part of the Belgian football system.
