Amos Beebe Eaton (born May 12, 1806 – died February 21, 1877) was an important officer in the United States Army. He became a general for the Union Army during the American Civil War. He was known for his excellent work in making sure soldiers had enough supplies.

Life and Military Service

Amos B. Eaton was born in Catskill, New York. He studied at the West Point and finished in 1826. For a while, he was an officer in the infantry, which means he led foot soldiers.

Early Military Career

Eaton fought in the Florida campaigns in the late 1830s. He also saw action during the Mexican–American War. For his service in that war, he was given the honorary rank of brevet major. A "brevet" rank is a temporary higher rank given for good service, but it doesn't always come with a pay raise.

After serving 12 years as a field officer, Eaton joined the army's supply department. This department was in charge of getting food, clothing, and other necessary items to the soldiers. He worked there for 23 years.

Role in the Civil War

In 1861, when the American Civil War began, Eaton was made a lieutenant colonel. He became an assistant commissary general. His main job was to create a good supply system for the new Union Army. Many new soldiers were joining, and the old system couldn't handle it.

Eaton worked hard to get and deliver supplies to the troops. Because of his important work, President Abraham Lincoln promoted him to brigadier general on July 6, 1864. He also became the head of the supply department for the regular army. This happened after the previous head, Brigadier General Joseph Pannell Taylor, passed away.

Later Years and Retirement

After the Civil War, in 1866, President Andrew Johnson nominated Eaton for the honorary rank of brevet major general. This was another way to recognize his important service. The U.S. Senate confirmed this promotion.

Amos Eaton retired from the army on May 1, 1874. He held the rank of brigadier general and was the commissary general of subsistence. After retiring, he moved to New Haven, Connecticut. He passed away there on February 21, 1877, and was buried in New Haven.
