Amsterdam is a small city located in the western part of Bates County, Missouri. It's also considered part of the larger Kansas City metropolitan area in the United States. In 2020, about 218 people lived there.

History of Amsterdam
Amsterdam was officially planned and mapped out in 1891. The city got its name from Amsterdam, which is the capital city of the Netherlands.
How Amsterdam Got Its Name
An important railroad executive from the early 1900s, Arthur Stilwell, chose the name. He picked it because a very important railway financier named Jan de Goeijen had his company in the Dutch capital. A post office has been open in Amsterdam, Missouri, since 1892.
Geography of Amsterdam
Amsterdam is located on Missouri Route Y. It's about three miles south of Merwin and six miles north of Amoret. The city is also 14 miles northwest of Butler. The border between Missouri and Kansas is only about one mile to the west.

In 2010, a count of the population, called a census, showed that 242 people lived in Amsterdam. These people lived in 95 different homes, and 62 of these were families.
