Amund Ringnes Island is a large, uninhabited island located far north in the Arctic Ocean. It's part of Canada's Nunavut territory, specifically in the Qikiqtaaluk Region. This island is one of the many islands that make up the Sverdrup Islands, which are part of the even bigger Queen Elizabeth Islands in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago.

Where is Amund Ringnes Island?

Amund Ringnes Island is found between 78 and 79 degrees north of the equator. It sits east of Ellef Ringnes Island and west of Axel Heiberg Island.

Several bodies of water surround it. Hassel Sound separates Amund Ringnes Island from Ellef Ringnes Island. To the south, you'll find Hendriksen Strait and Cornwall Island. Norwegian Bay is to the east, along with Haig-Thomas Island. To the north lies Peary Channel.

How Big is the Island?

Amund Ringnes Island covers an area of 5,255 square kilometers (about 2,029 square miles). To give you an idea of its size, it's the 111th largest island in the world! It's also Canada's 25th largest island. That's a pretty huge piece of land!

Who Was Amund Ringnes?

The island was named by a famous explorer named Otto Sverdrup. He first saw the island in the year 1900. He named it after Amund Ringnes, who was a brewer from Oslo, Norway. Amund Ringnes was one of the people who helped pay for Sverdrup's expedition.

For a while, from 1902 until 1930, the country of Norway claimed this island as its own. However, they later gave up their claim, and the island officially became part of Canada.
