Andreas "Andi" Herzog (born 10 September 1968) is a famous Austrian former football player and coach. He was most recently an assistant coach for the South Korea national team. During his playing career, he was an attacking midfielder. He is especially known for his time playing for Werder Bremen. Herzog played for the Austrian national team from 1988 to 2003. He played in 103 matches and scored 26 goals. He also represented Austria in the 1990 and 1998 FIFA World Cup tournaments.

Andi Herzog's Football Journey
Starting His Club Career
Andi Herzog was born in Vienna, Austria. He began his football journey at Rapid Vienna, a big local club. For a short time in 1987–88, he played on loan for First Vienna. This loan helped him improve his skills. He soon returned to Rapid Vienna for the 1988–89 season.
Herzog became a well-known player at Rapid Vienna. His great performances led him to join Bundesliga team Werder Bremen. He played there for eight years in two different periods. In between, he spent one season at Bayern Munich. With Bayern Munich, he won the UEFA Cup in 1996. They beat Girondins de Bordeaux in a two-game final.
Later Years and Retirement
After his time in Germany, Herzog returned to Rapid Vienna in 2002. He later decided to finish his playing career in the United States. He joined the Major League Soccer team Los Angeles Galaxy in 2004. He played well under coach Sigi Schmid. However, after a coaching change, he played less often. Andi Herzog announced his retirement from football on 10 November 2004.
Herzog was known as a stylish attacking midfielder. He was especially good at scoring amazing free-kicks. He was even chosen for Rapid Vienna's Team of the Century in 1999.
Playing for His Country
Andi Herzog first played for the Austrian national team in April 1988. This was a friendly match against Greece. He played in two FIFA World Cups for Austria: in 1990 and 1998. In the 1998 World Cup, he scored one goal against Italy from a penalty kick.
In May 2002, Herzog broke the record for most appearances for Austria. He played his 96th match against Germany, passing striker Anton Polster. His last international game was in April 2003 against Scotland. He played a total of 103 matches and scored 26 goals for Austria. He was Austria's most capped player until Marko Arnautović played his 104th game in September 2022.
Andi Herzog's Coaching Career
After retiring as a player, Andi Herzog became a football coach. On 23 January 2015, he was named the coach of the USA's under-23 team.
Later, on 1 August 2018, Herzog became the coach of the Israel national team. He stayed in this role for almost two years. On 24 June 2020, he left his position. His Austrian colleague, Willibald Ruttensteiner, took over as Israel's head coach.
Personal Life
Andreas Herzog is married and has two sons. He lives in Breitenfurt bei Wien, Austria.
His father, Anton "Burli" Herzog (born 1941), was also a football player. He played in the Austrian Bundesliga from 1961 to 1975. Some of his father's clubs included Austria Wien and Admira/Wacker Mödling. Andi Herzog grew up in Vienna-Meidling with his family.
