Andreas Ivanschitz (born 15 October 1983) is an Austrian retired footballer. He played as an attacking midfielder, which means he was a player who helps both in defense and offense.

During his career, Ivanschitz played for many different clubs. These included Rapid Wien, Red Bull Salzburg, Panathinaikos, 1.FSV Mainz 05, Levante, Seattle Sounders FC, and Viktoria Plzen. He also played for the Austrian national team from 2003. He even represented Austria at the UEFA Euro 2008 tournament.

Club Career Highlights

Andreas Ivanschitz was born in Eisenstadt, Austria. He started playing football at a young age for his local team, ASK Baumgarten. He spent nine years there, learning and improving his skills.

Starting with Rapid Wien

In 1998, when he was 15, talented scouts from Rapid Wien noticed him. He then signed his first professional contract with this big Austrian club. He was only 16 years old when he played his first match for Rapid Wien in 1999. His first official league game was in 2000.

Ivanschitz played 177 games for Rapid Wien and scored 27 goals. He helped his team win the Austrian Championship title in the 2004–05 season. In 2003, he was even chosen as the "Austrian Footballer of the Year." This was a big award for him.

Moving to Other European Clubs

In January 2006, Ivanschitz moved to Red Bull Salzburg. Later that year, in August 2006, he went to Greece to play for Panathinaikos. He first joined them on a two-year loan. A loan means a player temporarily plays for another team. In 2008, he signed a permanent deal with Panathinaikos.

After three years in Greece, he moved to Germany. On 18 July 2009, he joined Mainz 05 on a two-year loan. Mainz 05 liked him so much that they signed him permanently in January 2011, even before his loan ended.

Playing in Spain and the USA

On 10 June 2013, Ivanschitz left Mainz and moved to Spain to play for Levante. He scored his first goal in La Liga, which is Spain's top football league, on 31 August. It was a winning goal in the last moments of the game against Rayo Vallecano. He scored three goals in 29 games during his first season in Spain.

On 4 August 2015, he signed with Seattle Sounders FC in Major League Soccer (MLS), which is the top football league in the United States. He made his debut on 13 September, where he helped his team score a goal. Ivanschitz played an important role in the 2016 MLS Cup final. He scored a penalty kick in the shootout, helping the Sounders win their first MLS Cup title.

International Career

Andreas Ivanschitz started playing for the Austrian national team in February 2003. His first game was a friendly match against Greece. He also played for Austria in the UEFA Euro 2008 tournament. He played a total of 69 games for Austria and scored 12 goals.

Personal Life

Andreas Ivanschitz comes from a family that loves music. He enjoys playing different musical instruments in his free time. He is also part of the Burgenland Croat community in Austria. His son, Ilia, is also a footballer and currently plays for Red Bull Salzburg.
