Anne Voase Coates was a famous British film editor. She worked on movies for over 60 years! Born on December 12, 1925, she became known for editing the epic film Lawrence of Arabia in 1962. For this amazing work, she won an Oscar.

Anne Coates was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Film Editing five times. This shows how talented she was. Even though few women worked as editors in her time, she became one of the best. Early Life and Education

Anne Coates was born in Reigate, a town in Surrey, England. Her parents were Kathleen Voase and Major Laurence Calvert Coates. When she was young, Anne loved horses. She even thought about becoming a race-horse trainer!

She went to Micklefield School in Reigate. Later, she attended High Trees School in Horley. She finished her schooling at Bartrum Gables in Broadstairs. Before working in films, Anne was a nurse. She helped at a special hospital in East Grinstead, England. This hospital was known for pioneering plastic surgery.

Career in Film Editing

Anne Coates became interested in movies after watching Wuthering Heights. She wanted to direct films. She started as an assistant at a company that made religious movies. Her job included fixing film prints. This led her to a rare opportunity: becoming an assistant film editor at Pinewood Studios.

She learned a lot by helping other editors. One of her most famous projects was Lawrence of Arabia. She worked closely with director David Lean on this film. Anne had a very long and successful career. She edited many other well-known movies. These include Out of Sight and Erin Brockovich. She worked on both of these films with director Steven Soderbergh.

Anne Coates was a member of important groups for film editors. These included the Guild of British Film and Television Editors and American Cinema Editors. Many experts agree that women like Anne Coates were among the greatest film editors ever.

Personal Life

Anne Coates came from a family deeply involved in the film industry. Her uncle was J. Arthur Rank, a famous film producer. She was married to director Douglas Hickox for many years.

Her brother, John Coates, was also a producer. He worked on popular films like The Snowman. Anne's sons, Anthony and James Hickox, became film directors. Her daughter, Emma E. Hickox, followed in her footsteps and became a film editor too.

Death

Anne Coates passed away on May 8, 2018. She was 92 years old. She died at the Motion Picture Country Home and Hospital in Woodland Hills, California.
