About Ant Banks
Anthony Banks was born in Oakland, California, on May 16, 1969. When he was in school, he learned to play classical music on many different instruments during band lessons. At home, he taught himself to play funk music on his digital keyboard. He learned from famous funk bands like Parliament and The Gap Band.
Early Career in Music
Banks started making music with his friend, a rapper from Oakland named MC Ant. They would make mixtapes and sell them from the trunk of their car at their high school. These tapes quickly became very popular with other students.
In 1987, Banks, MC Ant, and their friends recorded MC Ant's first album, The Great. It was released in 1989. Banks also produced the first album for California rapper Spice 1, called Let It Be Known, which came out in 1991. These early projects, along with music from other artists, sold over 100,000 copies without much help from big record labels. This success made Banks a very important person in the Bay Area hip hop music scene in the early 1990s.
Working with Famous Artists
Ant Banks went on to produce songs for many well-known artists. These included Too Short, E-40, Snoop Dogg, and 3X Krazy. His skill in creating strong basslines is very famous. Even the electronic music group Daft Punk mentioned Ant Banks as an inspiration for their album Homework.
In 1996, Ant Banks was part of a special music project called America Is Dying Slowly. This was a collection of songs meant to raise awareness about the AIDS epidemic among African-American men. Other artists like Biz Markie and Wu-Tang Clan also contributed to this important album.
