Playing Career: Antonio Chimenti's Journey as a Goalkeeper
Early Days: Sambenedettese and Loans
Antonio Chimenti started his football journey in the youth team of S.S. Sambenedettese Calcio. In 1988, he joined the main team. He played two seasons there in Serie C1 and Serie C2.
Later, he was loaned to Tempio, another team in Serie C2. He played 35 games as their main goalkeeper. For the 1992–93 season, Chimenti was loaned to AC Monza Brianza, a team in Serie B. He only played 4 games there. After that, he went back to Sambenedettese. In total, he played only five games for Sambenedettese's first team.
Salernitana: A Step Up
In August 1993, Chimenti moved permanently to Salernitana Calcio. In his first year, he played 27 games. He helped his team get promoted from Serie C1 to Serie B.
For the next three seasons, Salernitana stayed in Serie B. Chimenti played 110 more games for them. His good performances caught the eye of Franco Sensi, who was part of the Serie A club, AS Roma.
AS Roma: Playing in Serie A
In the summer of 1997, Chimenti joined AS Roma in Serie A. On September 21, 1997, he played his first Serie A game for Roma. Roma won that match 3–1 against US Lecce.
He played 7 more games that season. In his second year with Roma, he played more often. He started 24 Serie A games, making 32 appearances in total over two years. After his time in Rome, Chimenti moved to another Serie A team, US Lecce.
US Lecce: A Regular Starter
In 1999, Chimenti signed a three-year contract with US Lecce. He quickly became their main goalkeeper. In his first season, he played 33 games for Lecce.
He played 34 more games in the 2000–01 Serie A season. The next season, he played 31 games. After three good years with Lecce, Chimenti moved to Juventus, a big club in Serie A and Europe.
Juventus: Backing Up a Legend
In the summer of 2002, Juventus bought Chimenti. His job was to be the backup goalkeeper for Gianluigi Buffon. Buffon was considered one of the best goalkeepers in the world. Chimenti took the place of the previous backup, Michelangelo Rampulla.
In his first season with Juventus, Chimenti played 4 Serie A games. Juventus won the league title that year. He also played in a UEFA Champions League game against Manchester United. Juventus reached the final of that competition but lost to AC Milan.
The next season, he played 2 more league games. Juventus finished third in Serie A. Chimenti also played in the 2004 Coppa Italia final, where Juventus lost to Lazio. He also played two games in the 2003–04 UEFA Champions League.
During the 2004–05 Serie A season, Chimenti played only 2 games. Juventus won another Serie A title, but it was later taken away because of a scandal.
For the 2005–06 Serie A season, Buffon got a serious injury. It looked like Chimenti would be the main goalkeeper. He even started in a game against Inter in the 2005 Supercoppa Italiana. However, Juventus then brought in Christian Abbiati on loan from Milan.
Buffon returned in November but got injured again. Abbiati became the main keeper. After another season mostly on the bench, Chimenti moved to Cagliari Calcio in January 2006. He moved on a free transfer, even though he had six months left on his Juventus contract.
Cagliari Calcio: Back as a Starter
After joining Cagliari Calcio, Chimenti became a starting goalkeeper in Serie A again. He played 21 games for Cagliari for the rest of that season. In his second season, he played 22 more games. This made a total of 43 games in one and a half seasons. In June 2007, his contract was not renewed, and he became a free agent.
Udinese Calcio: An Experienced Reserve
On June 29, 2007, Chimenti signed a one-year deal with Udinese Calcio. He joined them for free. He was brought in to be an experienced backup for Samir Handanovic. During his only season in Udine, he played three games in the 2007–08 Serie A season.
Return to Juventus: A Surprising Comeback
On July 19, 2008, at 38 years old, Chimenti made a surprising return to Juventus. He first joined on a loan deal, with Emanuele Belardi moving to Udinese. A few weeks later, Juventus also bought Alexander Manninger. This made Chimenti the third-choice goalkeeper for the 2008–09 Serie A season.
In January 2009, Chimenti officially transferred to Juventus permanently. He did not play any official games that season. But on March 14, 2010, because Buffon and Manninger were injured, Chimenti started a game against AC Siena. This was his first game for Juventus since his return. The match ended in a 3–3 draw.
Chimenti also started the next two games for Juventus. These were against Fulham in the UEFA Europa League and UC Sampdoria in Serie A. Both of these games ended in losses. In total, Chimenti played 34 games for Juventus.
Playing Style: What Made Chimenti Special
Antonio Chimenti was nicknamed Zucchina. He was known for his physical strength and confidence. He also had great mental focus and was very consistent as a goalkeeper.
He was especially good with the ball at his feet. When he was younger, he played as a forward, just like his father, Vito. This helped him control passes and keep the ball under pressure. He could even challenge opponents for the ball.
When he was young, his heroes were former Juventus goalkeepers Dino Zoff and Stefano Tacconi. They inspired him to become a goalkeeper. Chimenti improved a lot in his early 30s. His goalkeeping coach at Lecce, Franco Paleari, helped him. Paleari helped him improve his agility, technique, and explosive power. This made him better at stopping shots and saving penalties. Paleari praised him for his strong personality and desire to get better. However, Chimenti was not as good at rushing out to catch crosses.
Coaching Career: Life After Playing
In October 2022, Antonio Chimenti joined Serie B club SPAL. He became their goalkeeping coach. This happened when Daniele De Rossi was appointed as the new coach.
Personal Life: A Family of Footballers
Antonio Chimenti comes from a football family. His father, Francesco, and his uncle, Vito, were both also footballers.
