Playing Career
Starting Out at Sambenedettese
Antonio Chimenti began his football journey in the youth team of S.S. Sambenedettese Calcio. In 1988, he joined the main team. He spent two more seasons with Sambenedettese.
He was then loaned to Tempio and played 35 games as their main goalkeeper. For the 1992–93 season, Chimenti was loaned to AC Monza Brianza. After only 4 games there, he returned to Sambenedettese. Soon after, he was sold to Salernitana Calcio.
Time at Salernitana
In August 1993, Chimenti joined Salernitana Calcio permanently. In his first year, he played 27 games. He helped his team get promoted to Serie B, which is a higher league.
For the next three seasons, Salernitana stayed in Serie B. Chimenti played 110 more games during this time. His good performances caught the eye of Franco Sensi, who was with the Serie A club, AS Roma.
Playing for A.S. Roma
In the summer of 1997, Chimenti moved to Serie A team A.S. Roma. He made his Serie A debut on September 21, 1997. Roma won that game 3–1 against US Lecce.
He played 7 more games that season. In his second year with Roma, Chimenti played more often. He started 24 Serie A games, making a total of 32 appearances in two years. After his time in Rome, Chimenti moved to another Serie A club, US Lecce.
Years at US Lecce
In 1999, Antonio Chimenti signed a three-year deal with US Lecce. He quickly became the team's starting goalkeeper. In his first season, he played 33 games.
He played 34 more games in the 2000–01 Serie A season. The next season, he made 31 appearances. After playing well for three years, Chimenti moved to a big Serie A and European team, Juventus.
Joining Juventus
In the summer of 2002, Juventus bought Chimenti. He was brought in to be a backup goalkeeper for Gianluigi Buffon. Buffon was considered one of the best goalkeepers in the world.
In his first season with Juventus, Chimenti played 4 Serie A games. Juventus won the league title that year. He also played in a Champions League game. Juventus reached the final but lost to AC Milan.
The next season, he played 2 more league games. Juventus finished third in the league. Chimenti also played in the 2004 Coppa Italia final, where Juventus lost to Lazio. He also made two appearances in the 2003–04 UEFA Champions League.
During the 2004–05 Serie A season, Chimenti played only 2 games. Juventus won another Serie A title, but it was later taken away. For the 2005–06 Serie A season, Buffon got a serious injury. Chimenti was expected to fill in. However, Juventus brought in Christian Abbiati on loan.
After another season mostly on the bench, Chimenti moved to Cagliari Calcio in January 2006. He signed a two-year deal.
Playing for Cagliari
After moving to Cagliari Calcio, Chimenti became a starting goalkeeper in Serie A again. He played 21 games for the team for the rest of that season. In his second season, Chimenti played 22 more games. This made a total of 43 games in a season and a half. In June 2007, his contract ended, and he became a free agent.
Time at Udinese
On June 29, 2007, Chimenti signed a one-year deal with Udinese Calcio. He joined as an experienced backup for Samir Handanovic. During his one season there, he played three games in the 2007–08 Serie A season.
Back to Juventus
On July 19, 2008, at 38 years old, Chimenti made a surprising return to Juventus. He first joined on a loan deal. A few weeks later, Juventus also bought another goalkeeper, Alexander Manninger. This meant Chimenti became the third-choice goalkeeper for the 2008–09 Serie A season.
In January 2009, Chimenti joined Juventus permanently. He did not play any official games that season. However, on March 14, 2010, due to injuries to Buffon and Manninger, Chimenti started a game against AC Siena. This was his first game back with the club. The match ended in a 3–3 draw.
Chimenti also started the next two games for Juventus. These were against Fulham in the UEFA Europa League and UC Sampdoria in Serie A. Both of these games ended in losses for Juventus. In total, Chimenti played 34 games for Juventus during his career.
Playing Style
Antonio Chimenti was known for being strong and confident as a goalkeeper. He was also good at controlling the ball with his feet. This was because he played as a forward when he was younger, just like his father.
When he was young, his heroes were former Juventus goalkeepers Dino Zoff and Stefano Tacconi. They inspired him to become a goalkeeper. Chimenti got even better in his early 30s. His goalkeeping coach at Lecce, Franco Paleari, helped him improve his quickness and power. This made him better at stopping shots and saving penalties.
Coaching Career
In October 2022, Antonio Chimenti joined Serie B club SPAL. He became their goalkeeping coach when Daniele De Rossi was appointed as the new manager.
Personal Life
Antonio Chimenti comes from a family of footballers. His father, Francesco, and his uncle, Vito, both played football professionally.
