Daniele De Rossi (born 24 July 1983) is a famous Italian football manager and former player. He is well-known for playing almost his entire career with his hometown club, Roma. He also helped Italy win the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
De Rossi started playing professionally with Roma in the 2001–02 season. He quickly became a key player for the team. With Roma, he won the Coppa Italia twice and the 2007 Supercoppa Italiana. He was recognized as a top young player in 2006 and the best Italian player in 2009. After Francesco Totti retired, De Rossi became Roma's captain. He played 616 games for Roma, making him the club's second most-capped player ever. After 18 seasons, he left Roma in 2019 and played briefly for Boca Juniors before retiring.
De Rossi also played for Italy at different age levels, winning the 2004 European Under-21 Championship. He won a bronze medal at the 2004 Olympics. For the senior national team, he played 117 games, scoring 21 goals. This makes him one of Italy's most capped players and highest-scoring midfielders. He played in many major tournaments, including the 2006 World Cup, where Italy became champions.

Playing Career
Time with Roma
Starting Out: 2001–2006
Daniele De Rossi joined the Roma youth team in 2000. He used to play as a striker. His first game for Roma was in October 2001 in the UEFA Champions League. The next year, he played his first game in Serie A, Italy's top league. He even scored his first goal against Torino.
De Rossi quickly became a regular player in the midfield. He was known as a promising young talent in Italy. He helped Roma finish second in Serie A in 2004. He also played in two Coppa Italia finals. In 2006, he wore the captain's armband for Roma for the first time. He was praised for his fair play in a game against Messina. He told the referee that he scored a goal with his hand, even though the referee didn't see it. The goal was disallowed, but Roma still won. At the end of the season, he was named the best young player in Serie A.
Winning Trophies: 2006–2011
In the 2006–07 season, De Rossi continued to be a key player. He scored an amazing goal from far away against Fiorentina. He also scored in the 2007 Coppa Italia final against Internazionale, helping Roma win the trophy.
The next season, Roma won the Supercoppa Italiana against Inter, with De Rossi scoring the winning penalty. Roma also won the Coppa Italia again, beating Inter in the final. In 2009, De Rossi was named the best Italian Footballer of the Year.
In the 2009–10 season, De Rossi played his 200th Serie A game. He scored an important goal against rivals Inter. Roma went on a long unbeaten run but just missed out on winning the league title. He also helped Roma reach the 2010 Coppa Italia final. In 2011, he was named the best Italian Athlete of the Year.
Later Years and Captaincy: 2011–2019
In 2012, De Rossi signed a new contract with Roma. He continued to be an important player, even though he sometimes played less. He helped Roma win many games.

In the 2013–14 season, Roma started very strong, winning their first 10 league games. De Rossi played a big part in this success. He became Roma's captain when Francesco Totti was injured. By 2014, he became the third player with the most appearances for Roma in Serie A history.
He scored important goals in the following seasons, including his 500th game for Roma in 2015. In 2017, he helped Roma finish second in Serie A, which meant they qualified for the Champions League. He then signed a new contract.
After Francesco Totti retired, De Rossi officially became Roma's captain in 2017. In 2018, he scored a penalty against Barcelona in the Champions League. This helped Roma make an amazing comeback to reach the semi-finals for the first time in the Champions League era. In 2018, he played his 600th game for Roma, becoming only the second player to do so after Totti.
In May 2019, Roma announced that De Rossi would leave the club after 18 seasons. He played his last game for Roma on 26 May, ending his time as the club's second most-capped player.
Short Time with Boca Juniors and Retirement
De Rossi had always admired the Argentine club Boca Juniors. After leaving Roma, he joined Boca Juniors in July 2019. He scored his first goal for the club in his debut game. He also played in the Argentine Primera División and the 2019 Copa Libertadores.
In January 2020, De Rossi announced his retirement from professional football. He said he wanted to spend more time with his family. Boca Juniors went on to win the league title that season.
International Career
De Rossi is one of Italy's highest-scoring midfielders ever, with 21 goals in 117 games. He is also one of the players with the most appearances for the Italian national team.
Youth and Early Senior Career
De Rossi played many games for Italy's youth teams. He won the 2004 UEFA European Under-21 Football Championship with the Under-21 team. He scored in the final game. In the same year, he won a bronze medal at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens.
He made his debut for the senior Italian team in September 2004, scoring a goal against Norway. He was only 21 years old. He also wore Italy's captain's armband for the first time in a friendly game in 2005.
2006 FIFA World Cup
De Rossi was part of Italy's team for the 2006 FIFA World Cup. In a group game against the United States, he received a red card for elbowing an opponent. He was banned for four matches because of this.
After his ban, De Rossi returned for the World Cup final against France. He came on as a substitute. The game went to a penalty shootout, and De Rossi scored Italy's third penalty. This helped Italy win the shootout and their fourth World Cup title! At 22, he was the youngest player in Italy's winning squad.
Euro 2008 and Beyond
De Rossi played in all of Italy's Euro 2008 qualifying games. He even wore the number 10 shirt, which is usually given to key attacking players. He scored a goal against France in Euro 2008, helping Italy reach the quarter-finals.
He also played in the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup. He scored a goal against the United States and was named "Man of the Match." De Rossi was seen as a possible future captain for Italy because of his strong performances.
Later Tournaments
De Rossi scored Italy's first goal in the 2010 FIFA World Cup against Paraguay. He also helped Italy get a penalty in another game. Italy, however, was eliminated in the first round.
In UEFA Euro 2012, De Rossi played as a central defender in some games, showing how versatile he was. He then moved back to his usual midfield role. Italy reached the final but lost to Spain. De Rossi was included in the "Team of the Tournament" for his great play.
He also played in the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup, scoring against Japan. Italy finished third in that tournament. In the 2014 FIFA World Cup, De Rossi played well in Italy's first game against England. However, Italy was eliminated in the first round again.
Euro 2016 and Retirement from National Team
De Rossi continued to play for Italy under new manager Antonio Conte. He earned his 100th cap (game) for Italy in 2014. He scored a penalty against Bulgaria in a Euro 2016 qualifier but was later sent off. This made him Italy's most red-carded player ever, tied with two others. He was part of the UEFA Euro 2016 squad.
In 2017, De Rossi scored his 20th goal for Italy. He made his 117th and final international appearance in a World Cup play-off game against Sweden. Italy lost and failed to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. After the game, De Rossi announced his retirement from the national team.
Playing Style
Daniele De Rossi was known as one of the best midfielders in the world. He was a "complete midfielder" because he was good at many things. He could tackle, pass the ball well, and score goals. He was strong, energetic, and could read the game very well. He was also good in the air and had a powerful shot from far away.
He was great at winning the ball back and starting attacks. He was often compared to other top midfielders like Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard. De Rossi could play in different midfield roles, from defending to attacking. He could also play as a central defender sometimes. Because of his leadership and dedication, Roma fans called him capitan futuro (future captain).
Coaching Career
Starting as a Coach
After retiring as a player, De Rossi wanted to become a coach. In March 2021, he became an assistant coach for the Italian national team under Roberto Mancini. He helped Italy win UEFA Euro 2020 in 2021.
He then left the national team to complete his coaching courses. In September 2022, he started the highest coaching course, the UEFA Pro Licence.
SPAL and Roma
On 11 October 2022, De Rossi became the manager of Serie B team SPAL. However, he was dismissed in February 2023.
On 16 January 2024, De Rossi was appointed head coach of Roma, his former club, until the end of the season. His first game was a 2–1 win. He led Roma to the semi-finals of the 2023–24 UEFA Europa League. In June 2024, Roma extended his contract until 2027. However, after a difficult start to the new season, Roma dismissed De Rossi from his coaching role on 18 September 2024.
Managerial Career
On 24 January 2025, De Rossi became the owner and chairman of Ostiamare. This was the first team he played for as a young player.
Personal Life
Daniele De Rossi was born in Rome. His father, Alberto De Rossi, was also a coach for Roma's youth team. Daniele has two daughters, Gaia and Olivia Rose, and a son named Noah.
De Rossi first wore the number 27 shirt for Roma, then number 4. After his daughter Gaia was born, he changed to number 16. This was also the number worn by one of his football idols, Roy Keane.
He has a unique tattoo on his leg. It looks like a warning sign showing a football tackle, which shows his tough playing style. In 2016, he put his World Cup winner's medal in the coffin of Pietro Lombardi, who was the kitman for the 2006 Italy team. This showed his respect and kindness.
