Antonio Ortega Gutiérrez (born January 17, 1888 – died July 15, 1939) was a Spanish military officer. He was part of the Spanish Republican Army. He also served as the acting president of Madrid Football Club. This was between 1937 and 1938, during the Spanish Civil War. He played an important role in defending the city of Madrid.

What was Antonio Ortega's Role in the Spanish Civil War?

Antonio Ortega was a professional officer in the Spanish Army. He supported the Republican government. This was the official government during the Spanish Civil War. Before the war, he was a lieutenant in the Carabineros. These were like border guards or police. He was stationed in a town called Irun.

In August 1936, after a military uprising, he became the civil governor of Gipuzkoa. This meant he was in charge of the government in that area. He then took command of the Republican forces. This was during the later part of the Campaign of Guipúzcoa.

In 1937, he became the Secretary of Security. This was a very important role, like being in charge of national police. He also joined the Communist Party of Spain, a political group. Later, he was moved to a field command position. This meant he was directly leading troops.

In March 1939, he was the commander of the III Army Corps. This was a large group of soldiers. He supported a leader named Luis Barceló. This was during the final stages of the war. At the end of the war, he was captured by the Nationalists. They were the opposing side in the war. Antonio Ortega was sadly executed in Alicante, Spain, on July 15, 1939.

Antonio Ortega: President of Real Madrid

Antonio Ortega also served as the acting president of Madrid Football Club. During the Second Spanish Republic, the club was known as Madrid Football Club. He took on this role because the actual president, Rafael Sánchez Guerra, could not manage the club. This was due to the ongoing war.

Ortega took over from another Republican leader, Juan Jose Vallejo. Antonio Ortega, along with other club leaders, was captured after the city of Madrid fell. He was one of several Real Madrid board members who lost their lives during this difficult time.
