Apacheria facts for kids
Apachería was the name for the large area where the Apache people lived a long time ago. This land stretched from what is now northern Mexico all the way up to the Arkansas River in the United States. It also went from Central Texas across New Mexico to Central Arizona.
The Apache people lived in many parts of Apachería. Some of the most well-known Apache groups lived in the Great Plains. These areas included:
- South of the Arkansas River in Kansas and eastern Colorado.
- Parts of Eastern New Mexico.
- The Llano Estacado and Central Great Plains in western Oklahoma and Texas. These lands were east of the Pecos River and north of the Edwards Plateau.
Comancheria: A New Neighbor
In the early 1700s, another Native American group, the Comanche, started to move. They expanded from where Wyoming is today into new lands. These new lands became known as Comanchería. As the Comanche moved, they pushed other tribes out of the way. This forced the Apache people to move more to the south and west.
