Arden is a small community, also called a hamlet, in New York. It is located in Orange County, near the towns of Tuxedo and Monroe. This area is west of the Hudson River. The community of Arden is mostly covered by the 10910 ZIP Code.

History of Arden
Arden has a rich history, especially linked to iron production and a famous family.
Early Days as Greenwood
The area we now call Arden was first known as Greenwood. It became famous for its iron works, which were factories that made iron. These factories belonged to Robert and Peter P. Parrott. The Parrott family was well-known for creating the "Parrott gun."
The Greenwood Furnace
The Greenwood Furnace, an iron factory, started operating in 1810. During the American Civil War, this furnace produced the iron used to make the famous Parrott Gun. These powerful guns were built by the Parrott brothers in Cold Spring. The Parrott family also built St. John's Episcopal Church in Arden in 1863. By the 1890s, the iron industry in New York began to slow down. This happened because new, easier-to-reach iron sources were found in Minnesota.
How Arden Got Its Name
The community got its current name from the Arden estate. This large estate was built in the late 1800s by Edward H. Harriman. He was a very successful businessman who made his fortune in railroads. The Arden estate is now a National Historic Landmark, which means it's a very important historical place. However, it is not open to the public for visits.
The Arden Estate Today
In 2007, the Open Space Institute bought the Arden estate and about 540 acres of land around it. They paid $4.5 million to Columbia University for the property. A few years later, in 2011, the Open Space Institute sold the Arden Estate to another non-profit group for the same price.
