Argyle is a small city located in Denton County, Texas, in the United States. In 2022, about 5,503 people lived there. It is a suburb of Fort Worth, meaning it's a town near a larger city.
History of Argyle
The first European families settled in the Argyle area in the 1850s. Back then, the place was known as Pilot Knob or Waintown. Over time, the settlement slowly gained important services. A school was built in 1875, followed by a Baptist church in 1876, and a post office in 1878.
The community officially became Argyle in 1881. This happened after the Texas and Pacific railroad built train tracks through the area. Some people think a railroad surveyor named the town after a garden in France. Others believe it was named after the region of Argyll in Scotland. Around this time, there was a rumor that Sam Bass, a famous outlaw, hid $60,000 in gold coins in a cave nearby. Sam Bass died at age 27, and it's said he never got to retrieve the gold.
Growth was very slow during the 1800s. By 1890, only 148 people lived in Argyle. However, the town had several businesses related to farming. These included grist mills (which grind grain), general stores, and a cotton gin (which separates cotton fibers). In 1885, Argyle built a two-story brick school. The population grew to 238 people by 1930.
A bank was also started in 1906. It was a small red brick building with a drugstore in the front. The bank didn't last long before it was robbed in 1912. The robbers took $1,700 and were never caught. Electricity and telephone service became available in the mid-1930s.
The Great Depression was a tough time for the Argyle area. The population dropped to only ninety people by 1950. Argyle officially became its own city on September 19, 1960. M.H. Wilson was the first mayor. Slowly, the town's population grew as more people from the Dallas–Fort Worth area discovered its quiet, country charm. By the 1970s, Argyle had several stores and businesses. The population reached 1,575 in 1990. It then doubled to 3,282 people by the 2010 census. This fast growth is expected to continue as more areas around Dallas–Fort Worth develop.
