Arkady Ivani Ter-Tadevosyan (Armenian: Արկադի Իվանի (Հովհաննեսի) Տեր-Թադևոսյան; Russian: Аркадий Иванович Тер-Тадевосян; May 22, 1939 – March 31, 2021) was a very important military leader. People also knew him by his special nickname, Komandos. He was a Major General in the Soviet and Armenian armies.

Ter-Tadevosyan led Armenian forces during the First Nagorno-Karabakh War. He was also Armenia's former Deputy Minister of Defense. He is most famous for leading the operation to capture the town of Shushi in May 1992.

Biography

Arkady Ter-Tadevosyan was born as Artush Oganesovich Tadevosyan. His birthplace was Tbilisi, which was then part of the Georgian SSR in the Soviet Union. After finishing high school, he decided to become an army officer.

He studied at military schools in Baku and Leningrad. He served in different places, including Afghanistan. There, he earned the nickname "Mountain Fox" because he was so good at fighting in tough, mountainous areas. He also served in places like East Germany, Czechoslovakia, and Armenia.

Later, he taught at the Armenian State Agrarian University. When the Soviet Union broke apart, a conflict began in Nagorno-Karabakh. In 1990, Ter-Tadevosyan helped organize the defense of Armenian villages. These villages were near the borders of Soviet Azerbaijan. He joined a group called the Sasuntsi Davit Detachment. Their goal was to protect the villages from attacks.

First Nagorno-Karabakh War

After this, Arkady Ter-Tadevosyan went to Nagorno-Karabakh. His job was to train soldiers there. In 1991, he became the Head of the Training Corps Defense Committee.

In 1992, he was chosen to lead a very important operation. This operation was called "Operation Wedding in the Mountains." Its goal was to take control of the important town of Shushi. On May 9, 1992, Armenian forces successfully captured Shushi. This was their first big military victory in the First Nagorno-Karabakh War.

In Armenia, people know Ter-Tadevosyan as the "mastermind" behind the capture of Shushi. This means he was the brilliant planner of the operation. He also helped create the Armed Forces of Armenia. He guided them through many challenges to become a strong army. On May 25, 1992, he was given the rank of Major General. This was for his great achievements during the war. He also received the Order of the Combat Cross.

Later life and death

In May 2000, Ter-Tadevosyan started a new group called the Veterans of the War of Liberation. However, he left it a few months later.

In 2009, the President of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, Bako Sahakyan, honored him. He received the Order of the Golden Eagle and the title of Hero of Artsakh. This happened on the 17th anniversary of the Capture of Shushi. The region of Nagorno-Karabakh was very important to him. He would spend at least one week there every month.

In his later military career, Ter-Tadevosyan helped train special experts for the Armenian armed forces. He passed away in Yerevan, Armenia, on March 31, 2021. Many important people, including Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, sent their condolences. A special service was held for him in Yerevan. He was buried in the family cemetery in the Davitashen District, as he had wished.
