James Arthur Monk (born December 5, 1957) is a former American football player. He was a wide receiver in the National Football League (NFL). He played for the Washington Redskins, the New York Jets, and the Philadelphia Eagles. Many football experts believe he is one of the greatest wide receivers ever. Art Monk was added to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2008.

Art Monk is related to the famous jazz musician Thelonious Monk. Thelonious Monk was his first cousin once removed.
College Football Career
Art Monk played college football at Syracuse University from 1976 to 1979. He was a key player for the Orangemen team. He led his team in receiving for three seasons. He is still one of the top players in Syracuse history for career catches and receiving yards.
Professional Football Career
The Washington Redskins picked Art Monk in the first round of the 1980 NFL draft. In his first year, he was chosen for the All-Rookie team. He also set a new record for the Redskins with 58 catches in his rookie season.
In the 1984 season, Monk set an NFL record with 106 catches. He also gained 1,372 receiving yards that year. He was named the team's Most Valuable Player (MVP) and played in his first Pro Bowl. He was the first Redskins receiver to have three seasons in a row with over 1,000 receiving yards.
Art Monk was part of a famous group of wide receivers called "The Posse" in 1989. This group, which included Gary Clark and Ricky Sanders, was the first in NFL history to all gain over 1,000 receiving yards in the same season.
During his 14 years with the Redskins, the team won three Super Bowls. These were Super Bowl XVII, Super Bowl XXII, and Super Bowl XXVI. He was chosen as an All-Pro player in 1984 and 1985. He also played in the Pro Bowl in 1984, 1985, and 1986.
Art Monk played 15 seasons in the NFL. He had over 50 catches in nine of those seasons. Five times, he gained more than 1,000 receiving yards. He set a record for most career catches with 820 on October 12, 1992. He was the first player to reach 900 catches, finishing his career with 940. This was an NFL record at the time.
He also set a record for catching at least one pass in 183 straight games. He was named to the NFL 1980s All-Decade Team. Art Monk was also the first player to score a touchdown catch in 15 straight seasons. He was also the first to have at least 35 catches in 15 straight seasons.
On August 2, 2008, Art Monk was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. His former Redskins teammate Darrell Green was also inducted that day. When Monk was inducted, he received the longest standing ovation in Hall of Fame history. In 2012, he was also inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.

After Football
Business and Community Work
After retiring from football, Art Monk became a co-founder of Alliant Merchant Services. This company helps businesses with electronic payments.
He is also a dedicated Christian and helps his community. He co-founded the Good Samaritan Foundation with other football players. This foundation helps young people learn important skills and get training. Their program, STOP (Student Training Opportunity Program), helps high school students with after-school activities, tutoring, and mentoring.
Art Monk also started the Art Monk Football Camp in 1983. Over 14,000 young athletes have attended his camp.
