Arthur Kress Snyder (November 10, 1932 – November 7, 2012) was an American lawyer, politician, and restaurateur. He served on the Los Angeles, California, City Council for many years. After his time on the council, he continued his work as a lawyer.
About Arthur K. Snyder
Arthur Kress Snyder was born in Los Angeles, California, on November 10, 1932. He grew up and went to school in the city. He studied at Los Angeles City College, focusing on speech. Later, he earned a bachelor's degree in political science from Pepperdine College.
To pay for his education, Arthur worked many different jobs. He was a hod carrier, a ditch digger, and even worked in a brick factory. He also spent time as a sawmill worker, a recreation director, and a private investigator. He earned his law degree from the University of Southern California. While studying law, he also worked in public relations for the American Institute of Architects.
Arthur Snyder was a Baptist. He married his first wife, Mary Frances Neely, on March 5, 1954. Mary was a teacher and was very involved in community activities in Highland Park and Eagle Rock. They had two sons, Neely Arthur and Miles John. Arthur later married Michele Noval and then Delia Wu.
From 1952 to 1955, Snyder served as a captain in the U.S. Marines. During this time, he worked as a legal officer. After his military service, he became a licensed real estate broker from 1959 to 1967. Before becoming a City Council member himself, he worked as a field deputy for Councilman John C. Holland. He was also active in several community groups, including the Southside Chamber of Commerce and the American Legion. In 1982, he opened his own law firm.
Serving on the City Council
Arthur Snyder was elected to the Los Angeles City Council in 1967. He represented the 14th district, taking over from his former boss, John C. Holland. The City Council is a group of elected officials who make important decisions for the city. They create laws, approve budgets, and oversee city services.
In the 1970s, the 14th district was very diverse. It included areas like East Los Angeles, El Sereno, and Lincoln Heights. It also stretched to middle-class neighborhoods like Glassell Park, Highland Park, and Eagle Rock. The district even included parts of Griffith Park and the more expensive Los Feliz District.
Snyder was reelected in 1971 and 1975. In 1981, he ran for reelection without any opponents. However, in 1984, he faced a special election called a recall election. This happened partly because the population of his district had changed, with more Hispanic residents. Despite the recall effort, he won the election.
In January 1985, Snyder announced he would be leaving the City Council. He said he wanted to spend more time with his family, as his wife Delia was expecting a child. His resignation became official in July 1985.
After the Council
After leaving the City Council, Arthur Snyder became a lobbyist. A lobbyist works to influence government decisions on behalf of a group or organization.
In 2008, Snyder was semi-retired. He continued to work as a lawyer part-time, helping friends and former clients. He also invested in real estate, owning properties in Las Vegas and Texas. His home in Eagle Rock also served as his law office. In 2007, his company, Marisol, LLC, owned the name for the famous Don the Beachcomber restaurants.
Arthur K. Snyder passed away on November 7, 2012.
