Atlanta Memorial Park is a large public park located in the Buckhead area of Atlanta, Georgia. This park covers about 200 acres (81 hectares) and sits next to Peachtree Creek. This creek eventually flows into the Chattahoochee River. The park was created to remember those who fought in the Battle of Peachtree Creek. This important battle happened right on parts of this park and a nearby area called Tanyard Creek Park.

Park History

The land where Atlanta Memorial Park now stands was once the site of the Battle of Peachtree Creek. This was a major battle during the American Civil War as part of the Atlanta campaign.

In 1929, a former Georgia Governor, M. Hoke Smith, and others gave this land to the city of Atlanta. Their goal was to create a beautiful park for everyone to enjoy. A golf course named after the famous golfer Bobby Jones was built nearby in 1931. Construction on Atlanta Memorial Park itself began in 1933. Because the park is located near the creek, it sometimes experiences flooding when there's a lot of rain.

Park Improvements

In 2011, a group called the Atlanta Memorial Park Conservancy was formed. This group helps manage and take care of the park. In 2014, they organized a huge cleanup effort. Volunteers removed over 2 tons (about 1,800 kilograms) of trash from the park and the creek!

Between 2017 and 2019, the park received many updates and improvements. These included adding a brand new playground for kids to enjoy. The park's sewage system was also improved. New nature trails were created, allowing visitors to explore the natural beauty of the park. Plus, new sidewalks were built, making it easier and safer to walk around.
