Büchslen (also called Buchillon in French) used to be a small town in the Canton of Fribourg, Switzerland. It was part of the See district. On January 1, 2013, Büchslen joined with the nearby town of Morat.

History of Büchslen

Büchslen was first mentioned in official records in the year 1339. Back then, it was known as Buchillion. For a long time, until the 1700s, people called it Bichslen.

Where is Büchslen?

Before it merged with Morat, Büchslen covered an area of about 1.6 square kilometers (which is about 0.6 square miles).

Most of its land, about 81%, was used for farming. This included fields for growing crops, pastures for animals, and even some orchards. About 13.5% of the area was covered by forests. The remaining 9% had buildings and roads.

The town was located in the See/Lac district, right on the old main road between Murten and Bern.

The coat of arms for Büchslen is blue and shows two old-fashioned hunting rifles crossed over each other. This design is a type of "canting arms." This means the picture on the shield gives a hint about the town's name. In German, the word Büchse means a hunting rifle, which sounds like "Büchslen."
