Ried bei Kerzers is a small town, also called a municipality, located in the canton of Fribourg, Switzerland. Its name in French is Essert. It is special because most people here speak German, even though the Fribourg canton is mostly French-speaking.

In 2006, another nearby town called Agriswil joined with Ried bei Kerzers.

History of Ried bei Kerzers

Ried bei Kerzers was first mentioned in old records way back in 1340. At that time, it was called Riedes. For a long time, until 1901, it was known as Oberried.

Where is Ried bei Kerzers?

Ried bei Kerzers covers an area of about 7.57 square kilometers (about 2.92 square miles). A big part of this land, about 80%, is used for farming. Forests cover about 7% of the area. The rest, about 12%, has buildings and roads.

The town is located in the See/Lac district, close to the Grosses Moos wetlands. It includes the main village of Ried bei Kerzers, a smaller settlement called Gurzelen, and part of the Grosses Moos area. Since 2006, it also includes the land from the former town of Agriswil.
