Gempenach was once a small town, or municipality, in Switzerland. It was located in the canton of Fribourg, specifically in the See district. Its old French name was Champagny.

On January 1, 2022, Gempenach joined with two other former municipalities, Galmiz and Clavaleyres, to become part of the larger municipality of Murten.

History of Gempenach

Gempenach was first mentioned in official records in 1340. At that time, it was known by its French name, Champagnie. Later, in 1408, it was called Gempenach, and in 1409, Gempernach.

Where is Gempenach?

Gempenach covers an area of about 1.7 square kilometers (0.65 square miles). A large part of this land, about 74%, is used for farming. Forests cover about 18% of the area. The remaining land, about 6%, has buildings and roads.

The town is located in the See/Lac district. It is about 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) northeast of Murten. Gempenach is a linear village, meaning its buildings are spread out along a road.
