Clavaleyres was a small village in Switzerland. It used to be a municipality in the Canton of Bern. On January 1, 2022, Clavaleyres joined with the town of Murten. Murten is in the Canton of Fribourg. This merger meant Clavaleyres changed cantons.

History of Clavaleyres

Ancient Times

People lived in the Clavaleyres area a very long time ago. We know this because bronze rings from the La Tène culture were found there. This culture existed around 450 BC to 50 BC. Later, during the Roman Empire, the area was a large farm. This farm helped supply food to the nearby Roman city of Aventicum.

Middle Ages to Modern Day

In the Middle Ages, Clavaleyres was controlled by the Münchenwiler Priory. A priory is like a monastery. In 1527, the important city of Bern bought the town. For a short time, from 1798 to 1807, Clavaleyres was part of the Canton of Fribourg. But it was soon returned to the Canton of Bern.

Recent Merger

Clavaleyres was a unique place because it was an "exclave" of Bern. This means it was a piece of Bernese land surrounded by other cantons. There were talks for a long time about Clavaleyres joining another nearby town. In 2018, the people of Clavaleyres and Murten voted to merge. In 2020, both the Canton of Fribourg and the Canton of Bern agreed to this change. The Swiss Parliament also approved it. The merger happened in January 2022. This was a big event because it was the first time Fribourg's borders changed in over 200 years!
