The BAFTA Award for Best Original Music is a special prize given to people who create amazing music for movies. It's like the soundtrack of a film! This award is presented by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, which is a group that celebrates great work in film and TV.
This award has been given out every year since 1968 at the British Academy Film Awards. It used to be called the Anthony Asquith Award for Film Music.
A famous composer named John Williams has won this award seven times, which is more than anyone else! He has also been nominated 16 times. Another composer, Ennio Morricone, is the only one to win two years in a row. He won for The Mission in 1987 and The Untouchables in 1988. He also has a perfect record, winning all six times he was nominated.
Some composers have been nominated many times but haven't won yet, like George Fenton and Howard Shore, who each have six nominations.
Sometimes, a composer can be nominated for two different movies in the same year. This has happened to John Williams, Vangelis, Maurice Jarre, Hans Zimmer, and the team of Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.
In 2019, Lady Gaga made history as the first woman to win this award for her work on A Star Is Born. The next year, in 2020, Hildur Guðnadóttir became the first woman to win it all by herself for the movie Joker. In 2022, Hans Zimmer finally won for Dune after being nominated ten times, which was a new record!
In the lists below, you'll see the movies and composers who won. The winners are shown in bold with a gold background. The years listed are when the movies were released, not when the award ceremony happened (the ceremony always takes place the following year).
