Early Life and Musical Beginnings
Hildur was born in 1982 in Reykjavík, Iceland. She grew up in a town called Hafnarfjörður. Music was a big part of her family life. Her father, Guðni Franzson, is a composer, clarinet player, and teacher. Her mother, Ingveldur Guðrún Ólafsdóttir, is an opera singer. Her brother, Þórarinn Guðnason, is also a musician in the band Agent Fresco.
Hildur started playing the cello when she was just five years old. By the age of 10, she was already performing professionally with her mother at a restaurant. She studied music at the Reykjavik Music Academy. Later, she continued her studies in composition and new media at the Iceland Academy of the Arts and the Berlin University of the Arts.
Hildur's Music Career
Hildur released her first solo album, Mount A, in 2006. She used the name Lost In Hildurness for this album. She recorded it in New York City and Hólar in Iceland. In 2009, she released her second solo album, Without Sinking, with the label Touch.
Besides playing the cello and a special instrument called the halldorophone, Hildur also sings and arranges music for choirs. She even arranged music for a choir that performed with the band Throbbing Gristle. As a composer, she writes original music. She wrote the music for the play Sumardagur ("Summer Day") in Iceland. She also composed music for the Danish film Kapringen (2012) and worked with Jóhann Jóhannsson on Mary Magdalene (2018).
Her music for the 2019 TV series Chernobyl was highly praised. It won her a Primetime Emmy Award and her first Grammy Award.
Hildur also composed the music for the 2019 film Joker, which starred Joaquin Phoenix and Robert De Niro. For this film, she won the Premio Soundtrack Stars Award at the 76th Venice International Film Festival and the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score. She was the first solo woman to win the Golden Globe in this category. At the 92nd Academy Awards, Hildur won the Oscar for Best Original Score. This made her the first woman to win this award by herself since 2000. She is also the first Icelander to ever win an Oscar. She returned to compose music for the sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux, which was released in 2024.
In 2021, Hildur worked with her husband, Sam Slater, on the music for the video game Battlefield 2042. The soundtrack for the game was released on September 10, 2021.
