Hildur Ingveldardóttir Guðnadóttir (born September 4, 1982) is an Icelandic musician and composer. She is famous for creating music for movies and TV shows. Hildur is a trained cello player. She has won many important awards for her music. These include an Academy Award, two Grammy Awards, and a Primetime Emmy Award.
Hildur is known around the world for her amazing film and TV music. She composed for movies like Journey's End (2017) and Mary Magdalene (2018). She also worked on Sicario: Day of the Soldado (2018), Tár (2022), and Women Talking (2022).
Her music for the movie Joker (2019) was a huge success. For Joker, she won the Academy Award for Best Original Score. She also won the BAFTA Award for Best Original Music and the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score. This made her the first solo female composer to win all three of these major awards.
Hildur also created the music for the HBO miniseries Chernobyl (2019). This work earned her a Primetime Emmy Award. She also received a BAFTA TV Award and a Grammy Award for Chernobyl.

Early Life and Musical Beginnings
Hildur was born in 1982 in Reykjavík, Iceland. She grew up in a town called Hafnarfjörður. Music runs in her family. Her father, Guðni Franzson, is a composer and plays the clarinet. Her mother, Ingveldur Guðrún Ólafsdóttir, is an opera singer. Her brother, Þórarinn Guðnason, is in the band Agent Fresco.
Hildur started playing the cello when she was just five years old. She had her first professional music job at age 10. She played alongside her mother at a restaurant. Hildur studied music at the Reykjavik Music Academy. Later, she studied composition and new media at the Iceland Academy of the Arts. She also attended the Berlin University of the Arts.
Hildur's Music Career
In 2006, Hildur released her first solo album, Mount A. She released it under the name Lost In Hildurness. She wanted to make this album mostly by herself. She recorded it in New York City and Hólar in northern Iceland. In 2009, her second solo album, Without Sinking, came out. It was released by the U.K. music label, Touch.
Besides playing the cello and halldorophone, Hildur also sings. She arranges music for choirs too. She once arranged a choir for the band Throbbing Gristle. As a composer, she wrote music for a play called Sumardagur ("Summer Day"). This play was performed at Iceland's National Theatre.
She also composed music for the Danish film Kapringen (2012). She worked on Mary Magdalene (2018) with Jóhann Jóhannsson. She also composed for Sicario: Day of the Soldado (2018). Her music for the 2019 miniseries Chernobyl was highly praised. It won her a Primetime Emmy Award. She also won the first Grammy Award for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media for Chernobyl.
Hildur composed the music for the 2019 film Joker. This movie starred Joaquin Phoenix and Robert De Niro. For Joker, she won the Premio Soundtrack Stars Award at the 76th Venice International Film Festival. She also won the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score. This made her the first solo woman composer to win this Golden Globe award. At the 92nd Academy Awards, Hildur won the award for Best Original Score. She was the first woman to win this award since 2000. She is also the first Icelander to win an Oscar. She will return to compose for the sequel Joker: Folie à Deux in 2024.
In 2021, Hildur worked with her husband, Sam Slater. They created the music for the video game Battlefield 2042. The soundtrack was released on September 10, 2021.
Personal Life
Hildur lives in Berlin, Germany, with her son, who was born in 2012. She is married to Sam Slater. He is an English composer, music producer, and sound artist. They have worked together on many projects, including Chernobyl and Joker. She used to share a music studio with other composers like Dustin O'Halloran and the late Jóhann Jóhannsson. Jóhann Jóhannsson was a frequent collaborator with Hildur.
