Banbasa is a small town in the Champawat district of Uttarakhand, India. It is well-known for being a major crossing point into Nepal from India. Most people in Banbasa work in farming.

Life in Banbasa
In 2011, Banbasa had about 7,990 people living there. This was an increase from 7,138 people in 2001. For every 1,000 boys, there were about 887 girls. About 52% of the people were male, and 48% were female. Around 12% of the population were children.
Most adults in Banbasa can read and write, with a literacy rate of about 77%. The original people living in this area are the Buksas and Tharus.
Banbasa is located about 10 kilometers from a town called Tanakpur.
Nature and Climate
Banbasa is famous for the Banbasa Barrage and Dam. This dam is built across the Sharda River. It helps control the water and provides water for farming. Many people also start their journey to the mountains for the Holy Purnagiri Pilgrimage from here.
The area around Banbasa is very green. You can find many farms growing sugarcane, rice, and wheat. There are also lots of mango trees. The weather in Banbasa is hot and humid during the summer. It gets a lot of rain in the late summer. Winters are quite cold.
If you travel to Banbasa from Delhi, you will pass through a beautiful 6-kilometer stretch of jungle. This jungle is home to many wild animals. You might see elephants, leopards, tigers, monkeys, bears, snakes, and deer. Many people who live near Banbasa actually live in the jungles surrounding the town.
Visiting Banbasa
Banbasa has a few small hotels, but it's not usually a place tourists visit for a long vacation. Most visitors come to Banbasa for two main reasons:
- They are crossing the border into Nepal.
- They are heading up into the Himalayas and its hill stations.
Crossing the Border
Banbasa is a very popular place to cross from India into Nepal. The Nepal border is only about 5 kilometers away. You can easily find rickshaws, tuk-tuks, or horse-drawn carts to take you there. There are special offices for immigration from both countries. This makes it easy for people to cross legally.
Vehicles can also cross the border. However, there are specific times during the day when this is allowed, usually 3 to 4 times a day. Indian and Nepalese citizens can cross the border without many restrictions. But if you are from another country, there is a special checkpoint for customs.
Places to See
One interesting place near Banbasa is The Good Shepherd Agricultural Mission. This is an orphanage that cares for about 80 children. It is located just 1 kilometer from the town. If you want to visit, you need to ask for permission first through their website. The mission is right on the edge of the jungle and has been helping children since 1948.

Banbasa is well-connected by different types of transport.
Buses
You can take direct buses from Banbasa to many big cities in India. These include Delhi, Agra, Bareilly, Rudrapur, Nanital, Haldwani, Dehradun, Haridwar, Amritsar, Chandigarh, and Shimla. Some routes have many buses throughout the day, while others might only have a few. Banbasa is one of the last stops before the roads start climbing into the Himalayan mountains. These roads lead to places like Almorah, Champawat, and Pithoragarh.
Trains
Trains also run to Banbasa. There is a direct train line from Delhi that passes through Bareilly. This makes it easy to reach Banbasa by train.
