Bardcore or tavernwave is a fun music style. It became very popular in 2020. This type of music takes modern pop songs. Then, it changes them to sound like songs from the Middle Ages. Imagine your favorite song played with lutes and flutes!
How Bardcore Started
The idea of medieval-style remakes began before the name "bardcore" was common. In December 2017, a YouTuber called Algal the Bard shared a medieval version of "Toxicity". This song was originally by System of a Down. By 2020, millions of people had watched his video.
The real start of bardcore as a big trend was in April 2020. This was during the time many people were staying home due to lockdowns. A 27-year-old German YouTuber, Cornelius Link, released "Astronomia (Medieval Style)". This song was a remake of a popular electronic dance track. That original song was famous for being part of the "coffin dance meme".
A few weeks later, Link made another medieval-style song. It was an instrumental version of "Pumped Up Kicks" by Foster the People. Then, a Canadian YouTuber named Hildegard von Blingin' added her own vocals. She changed the original lyrics to sound more medieval. By the end of June, both versions had millions of views.
Hildegard von Blingin' became very well known for her bardcore songs. She has covered many famous artists. These include Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance" and Radiohead's "Creep". She also remade Dolly Parton's "Jolene" and Lana Del Rey's "Summertime Sadness". She even covered Gotye's "Somebody That I Used to Know". She always changes the rhythm and words to fit the medieval style.
Even famous groups like Wu Tang Clan have noticed bardcore. They shared a cover of their song C.R.E.A.M by an artist called 'Beedle the Bardcore'. They posted it on their official YouTube channel.
Many other YouTubers joined the bardcore trend. These include the Latvian band Auļi, Graywyck, Constantine Bard, and Samus Ordicus. People often use medieval art for their bardcore song videos. This art often looks like the Bayeux Tapestry or old illuminated manuscripts. These are old books with beautiful drawings.
In October 2020, a radio host named Scott Mills played bardcore songs on his show. He featured music by Beedle The Bardcore, Hildegard Von Blingin', and Stantough. Stantough had covered Harry Styles' "Watermelon Sugar". This helped bardcore reach even more listeners.
