Bardonnex is a municipality (a type of local government area) in the canton of Geneva in Switzerland. It's a charming place located close to the border with France.

History of Bardonnex
Bardonnex is quite old! It was first mentioned in official records way back in 1153. At that time, its name was written as Bardonacum.
Geography of Bardonnex
Bardonnex covers an area of about 5 square kilometers (which is about 1.9 square miles). A large part of this land, around 73.6%, is used for farming. This means you'll see many fields and farms there.
About 3.4% of the area is covered by forests. The rest of the land, about 23.6%, is where buildings and roads are located. This includes homes, businesses, and the paths people use to get around.
Bardonnex is located in the southern part of the Canton of Geneva. It sits right on the border between Switzerland and France. The municipality includes the main village of Bardonnex, along with several smaller communities. These include places like Charrot, Croix-de-Rozon (which is a border crossing point), Compesières, Landecy, La Mure, and Cugny.
In 1851, the community of Compesières was actually split between Bardonnex and another municipality called Plan-les-Ouates. Today, Bardonnex is made up of several sub-sections or villages, such as Ravières, Compesières, Surpierre, La Croix-de-Rozon, Landecy, Charrot, and the main Bardonnex village.
Coat of Arms
The official symbol, or blazon, of Bardonnex's coat of arms is a red shield with a silver Maltese Cross on it. This special cross comes from the Order of St John. This group had a special base, called a commandery, in Bardonnex starting in the 13th century.
Population and People
Bardonnex has a population of about 2,212 people (as of 2022). Over the past ten years, the number of people living here has grown by about 5.8%.
Most people in Bardonnex speak French, which is the main language. About 85.4% of the population speaks French. Other languages spoken include Portuguese (3.6%) and English (3.0%).
In 2008, the population was almost evenly split between men and women. About 49.7% were male and 50.3% were female. Many people living in Bardonnex were born either in the municipality itself or in the Canton of Geneva. About 29.2% of the residents were born outside of Switzerland.
The age groups in Bardonnex show a good mix:
- Children and teenagers (0–19 years old) make up about 26% of the population.
- Adults (20–64 years old) make up about 64.9%.
- Seniors (over 64 years old) make up about 9.2%.

Important Heritage Sites
Bardonnex is home to some important historical places. The Compesières Commandry is one of them. This was a historical base for the Order of Malta. It also has a museum related to the Order of Malta.
Another important site is the Domaine Micheli in Landecy. Both the Compesières Commandry and the Domaine Micheli are listed as Swiss heritage sites of national significance. This means they are very important historical and cultural places in Switzerland. The village of Landecy and the Compesières area are also part of the Inventory of Swiss Heritage Sites.
Economy and Jobs
In Bardonnex, people work in different types of jobs.
- Agriculture: About 88 people work in farming, which is the primary economic sector. There are about 18 businesses related to farming.

Based on information from 2000, many people in Bardonnex identify with different religions.
- About 44.7% of the population are Roman Catholic.
- About 16.0% belong to the Swiss Reformed Church.
- Some people belong to other Christian churches (2.2%), the Orthodox church (0.48%), or are Islamic (1.24%).
- A significant number of people, about 26.79%, do not belong to any church, or are agnostic or atheist.
Education
Education is important in Bardonnex. Many adults have completed higher education. About 30.7% of the population has finished non-mandatory upper secondary education. Also, about 20.8% have completed additional higher education, like attending a university or a specialized college.
The school system in the Canton of Geneva has different levels:
- Kindergarten: Young children can attend two years of non-obligatory kindergarten. In 2009–2010, there were 34 children in pre-kindergarten classes in Bardonnex.
- Primary School: Students are required to attend six years of primary school. In Bardonnex, there were 66 students in kindergarten or primary school during that time.
- Secondary School: After primary school, there are three years of obligatory lower secondary schooling. There were 66 lower secondary students attending school in Bardonnex. After that, students can choose to go to optional, advanced schools for three to five years.
In 2000, some students from Bardonnex (206 of them) went to schools outside the municipality. Also, 13 students from other municipalities came to school in Bardonnex.
