History of Barre
The Town of Barre was officially created in 1818. It was formed from a part of the Town of Gaines. The town got its name from the hometown of one of its first settlers.
A historic building, the Benjamin Franklin Gates House, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2009. This list includes important places that are worth preserving.
Geography of Barre
Barre covers a total area of about 55.1 square miles (142.5 square kilometers). Most of this area is land.
The southern border of Barre is shared with the Towns of Elba and Oakfield. These towns are located in Genesee County.
New York State Route 98 is an important road that goes through Barre. It runs from north to south. This road crosses New York State Route 31A near the northern part of the town.
