Gaines is a town located in Orleans County, New York, in the United States. In 2020, about 3,226 people lived there. Back in 2010, the population was 3,378. The town is named after General Edmund P. Gaines. He was a hero who helped protect the area during the War of 1812.

The Town of Gaines is in the middle-north part of Orleans County. Part of the Village of Albion is also inside Gaines. Albion is important because it's the 'county seat,' which means it's where the county government offices are. The current leader of Gaines is Tyler James Allport.

History of Gaines

The Town of Gaines was created in 1816. It was formed from a part of the Town of Ridgeway. This happened even before Orleans County was officially set up. In 1890, the population of Gaines was 2,070 people.

Geography of Gaines

Gaines covers a total area of about 34.4 square miles (89.2 square kilometers). Most of this area is land. Only a very small part, about 0.04 square miles (0.10 square kilometers), is water.

The famous Erie Canal touches the southern edge of the town at a spot called Gaines Basin. The Oak Orchard River also flows through the northwest part of Gaines. It then continues into the Town of Carlton. The northernmost point of the Erie Canal is actually found right here in Gaines.

Main Roads in Gaines

Several important roads run through Gaines:

  • New York State Route 104 (also known as Ridge Road) goes from east to west across the town.
  • New York State Route 98 (Oak Orchard Road) runs from north to south. It crosses NY-104 north of the village of Albion, near a place called Childs.
  • New York State Route 279 (Gaines Waterport Road) is another north-south road. It meets NY-104 in the village of Gaines.

  • Albion - This village is the main town of Orleans County. It's also a port along the Erie Canal.

  • Eagle Harbor – Another hamlet in the southern part of the town. It got its name because an eagle's nest was found there when the Erie Canal was being built.
  • East Gaines – A hamlet located east of Gaines village, also on NY-104.
  • Five Corners – This hamlet is south of Childs, on NY-98.
  • Gaines – This is the main hamlet of Gaines. It was started in 1832 and is located where Routes NY-104 and NY-279 meet.
  • Gaines Basin – A hamlet named after a wide part of the Erie Canal. This wider section allowed barges to turn around easily.
  • Waterport Pond – A wide part of the Oak Orchard River that is partly located within the town.
  • West Gaines – A hamlet west of Gaines village on NY-104. Today, it's mostly a small group of houses.

Notable People from Gaines

  • Charles Anderson Dana (1819-1897) – He was a managing editor for the New York Tribune newspaper. He also served as Assistant Secretary of War during the American Civil War. He lived in Gaines Basin as a child.
  • Horace Greeley (1811-1872) – He was the founder and editor of the New York Tribune. He owned property in Childs during the 1860s.
  • Almanzor Hutchinson – A farmer who also served as a state legislator.
