Barton is a lovely linear village and civil parish located in the City of Preston, Lancashire, England. A linear village means it's built mostly along a main road. In 2011, about 1,150 people lived here.

Exploring Barton's Location and Surroundings

Barton is about 6 miles (10 km) north of Preston. It is also 2 miles (3 km) north of Broughton. The A6 road runs along the west side of the parish. A bridge carries the A6 road over the West Coast Main Line railway. This is just north of the village hall.

How Motorways and Brooks Shape Barton

The M6 motorway also goes through Barton. It divides the village, with part of it on the west side. Barton Brook flows through the parish from northeast to southwest. This brook gets its name where Sparling Brook and Westfield Brook meet. This meeting point is south of Barton Old Hall.

Important Markers and Historic Homes

A marker for the parish boundary with Broughton is on the A6 road. It is at Cardwell Bridge over the brook. This bridge was rebuilt in 1921 after floods damaged it. Barton Grange was once a country home for John Healey, a local mill owner. Later, it became a hotel. You can find Barton's name on three old milestones along Garstang Road. These milestones are listed by Historic England as important historical items.

A Look at Barton's Past and Landmarks

The parish church of St Lawrence was rebuilt in 1895. It was designed by Richard Knill Freeman. This church is a Grade II listed building, meaning it's historically important. It is part of the Fellside Team of parishes.

The Story of The Boar's Head Pub

The Boar's Head public house was a big part of village life for 200 years. It was on Garstang Road near St Lawrence's church. In 1872, people described its look. It had rails at the front and little white stones. Bright flowers bordered these stones. The front steps were very clean, with roses blooming above. It also had a "fierce yet faded" picture of a wild animal's head. The pub closed in 2017. The building was badly damaged by fire two years later. It was taken down in 2022 to make way for new houses.

Barton's Railway History

Barton and Broughton railway station was at Newsham. It was about three-quarters of a mile south of Barton. This station opened in 1840. It stopped serving passengers in 1939.

Community Life and Facilities in Barton

Barton St Lawrence CofE Primary School is on Jepps Avenue. The village hall is on the northern edge of the village. It was built in 1924. Barton also has a Bowling Club. The Barton and Myerscough Tennis Club has courts next to the hall. These places offer fun activities for the community.

Discovering Newsham: A Part of Barton

Newsham became part of Barton parish in 1894. Before that, it was a separate part of Goosnargh parish. St Mary's Newhouse Catholic Church is in Station Lane, Newsham. It was officially opened in 1906. This building replaced older churches.

Schools in Newsham

St Mary & St Andrew's Catholic Primary School is also on Station Lane. It used to be called Newhouse School. This school was formed in 1988. It combined St Mary's with St Andrew's from Cottam. The school buildings themselves date back to 1857.
